The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in the Free State has elected new leadership to serve as Provincial Executive Committee at Ilanga Estate, Bloemfontein, on Wednesday, 16 February 2022.
SALGA Executive Committee Member, Cllr T Ngubane delivered message of appreciation to the outgoing PEC, and officially announced that in terms of the constitution, their role as PEC Members came to an end.
“The respect that is going to be afforded to SALGA will depend on the quality of leadership in this conference. we hope that the people that will be elected need to set time aside to do SALGA work and prioritise its activities”said Ngubane
Newly elected SALGA leadership took an oath to uphold the work of SALGA and Local government . The oath was administered by Acting Chief Magistrate L P Mbassa.

The election processes were facilitated by the Independent Electoral Commission and the outcomes are as follows:
1. PEC Chairperson: Councillor Mathabo Leeto (Lejweleputswa District Municipality) – Female
2. 1st Deputy Chairperson: Councillor Victoria De Beer Mthombeni (Ngwathe Local Municipality) – Female
3. 2nd Deputy Chairperson: Councillor Mxolisi Siyonza (Mangaung Metro Municipality) – Male
4. 3rd Deputy Chairperson: Councillor Conny Msibi (Thabo Mutsanyaba District Municipality) Female

5.1. Councillor Gilbert Mokotso (Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality) – Male
5.2. Councillor Malefu Vilakazi (Thabo Mofutsanyana Municipality) – Female

In closing the Conference, the newly elected Free State PEC Chairperson, Cllr Mathabo Leeto reiterated the importance of working together.
Leeto said, “We should avoid ‘the us and them’ mentality between municipalities and SALGA, and nothing should be about us without us (local government)”.
