Orlando Pirates vs Polokwane City
By Sello Masilo
Orlando Pirates delivered a commanding performance at the iconic Orlando Stadium on Tuesday, securing a 3-0 victory over Polokwane City in their Betway Premiership clash. The win propelled the Buccaneers to the top of the league standings, with six points from two matches, continuing their unbeaten start to the season.
The match, characterized by Orlando Pirates’ relentless pressure, saw Monnapule Saleng break the deadlock in the 55th minute after a well-worked team move. Pirates dominated possession throughout, but Polokwane City remained compact and resilient in defence during the first half. Both teams went into halftime at 0-0, with Pirates frustrated by long-range efforts that failed to find the back of the net.
In the second half, Pirates increased their attacking intensity. Saleng’s strike from a tight angle came after some brilliant work from Relebohile Mofokeng, putting the hosts 1-0 up. Polokwane City, despite their defensive discipline, began to show cracks under the sustained pressure from the Buccaneers.
Coach Jose Riveiro made impactful substitutions in the 84th minute, introducing Evidence Makgopa, who wasted no time in making his mark on the match. Makgopa capitalized on a parried save by Polokwane goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga in the 86th minute to extend Pirates’ lead to 2-0. The towering striker sealed the victory by completing his brace in stoppage time, pouncing on a poor back pass by Raymond Daniels to slot home the third goal.
Polokwane City, having recorded their first defeat of the season, slipped to third in the standings. Despite their defensive efforts in the first half, their resistance crumbled in the latter stages of the game. Coach Phuti Mohafe’s team will look to regroup as they prepare to face Stellenbosch FC in their next match.
