By Thys Khiba – The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) is expected to join the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)’s National Shutdown set for the 20th of March.
While briefing the media in Johannesburg, the Saftu’s general-secretary Zwelinzima Vavi indicated that their participation in the National Shutdown comes with preconditions.
“This means that we will mobilise our own members to join the protest across the country, however our participation has conditions which have been discussed with the EFF.
“Thus includes that the shutdown is not sectarian, where all other formations will be called to join a programme of one political party.
“Saftu is not willing to join a political party programme, we can’t do that were are an independent federation. We can only join a broad front of left formations working together to achieve a common goal of an effective national shutdown,” said Vavi.
The march is aimed at expressing concern over the power cuts at Eskom, the rising cost of living, unemployment and crime amongst other issues.
The Labour Federation confirmed that workers who are interested to join the shutdown will be protected.
“We have submitted a Section 77 notice this morning to Nedlacto protect all workers, in and outside the federation. This means any worker, even if they are not member of any union, will be protected from victimisation by the employer when they participate in that national shutdown,” Vavi said.
