Safer Festive Season Operations
The police in Limpopo, specifically in the Thohoyandou policing precinct, have made significant strides in ensuring the safety and security of the community during the festive season. On Tuesday, December 19, 2023, a multi-disciplinary operation known as **Operation Banna** was conducted, resulting in the arrest of fifty-three suspects for various crimes.
The operation, which lasted from 07:00 in the morning until 16:00 in the afternoon, involved a collaboration of law enforcement agencies, including the SAPS, Provincial Traffic, Community Police Forum, and Community in Blue Patrollers. The Provincial Men for Change led the operation, saturating the streets of Thohoyandou and surrounding areas to uphold the rule of law and create safer communities.
The main objectives of Operation Banna included the execution of crime prevention duties such as roadblocks, patrolling of shopping complexes, ATMs, and fuel stations. Additionally, vehicle checkpoints, stop and searches, and crime awareness campaigns were conducted, which involved distributing pamphlets with crime prevention tips and conducting compliance inspections at liquor outlets.
The suspects were arrested for a range of offenses, including public drinking, violations of the road traffic act, undocumented immigration, and outstanding warrants of arrest. The total fine amount for the road traffic act summonses stands at R29 200. These suspects are expected to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court soon.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner, emphasized the ongoing nature of these operations across all districts of the province. She assured the public that such operations will be intensified to further enhance the safety of Limpopo citizens during the festive season. With the recent deployment of new Police Constables, the increased police presence will continue to contribute to a safer environment for all. As a result, the community can expect more of these operations aimed at maintaining a secure environment throughout the heightened festive season.
