In a significant development within South African football, Danny Jordaan, President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), was arrested this morning by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks. Jordaan, along with two other high-ranking officials, faces allegations of fraud and misuse of SAFA resources amounting to R1.3 million between 2014 and 2018. The accused are scheduled to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court later today.
The Hawks’ investigation centres on claims that Jordaan utilised SAFA funds for personal benefit, including the unauthorised hiring of a private security firm and a public relations company. These actions allegedly contravened SAFA statutes and resulted in substantial financial losses for the association.
In an official statement, the Hawks detailed the allegations:
“The Serious Commercial Crime Investigation executed search and seizure warrants this morning at the South African Football Association’s office. The warrants were prompted by allegations of fraud and theft amounting to R1.3 million. The allegations are that between 2014 and 2018, the president of SAFA used the organisation’s resources for his personal gain, including hiring a private security company for his personal protection and a public relations company without authorisation from the SAFA board. The president is also reported to have violated SAFA statutes, thus prejudicing SAFA an actual loss of R1.3 million.”
The arrests follow a raid conducted by the Hawks on SAFA House in March 2024, during which electronic devices and documents were seized as part of the ongoing investigation. At that time, SAFA vehemently denied any wrongdoing, labelling the raid as “unlawful” and “malicious.” The association also announced intentions to pursue legal action against the Hawks for defamation of character.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed concern over the situation, requesting a comprehensive report from SAFA to ensure compliance with CAF and FIFA statutes. CAF emphasised the importance of maintaining the integrity and image of football in South Africa amid these serious allegations.
