SAFA Chief Medical Officer Dr Thulani Ngwenya Heads to Paris for 2024 Olympic Games

The South African Football Association (SAFA) Chief Medical Officer, Dr Thulani Ngwenya, is set to represent South Africa at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Departing today, Dr Ngwenya will join Team South Africa and the medical team tasked with ensuring the well-being of South African athletes throughout the Games. He is scheduled to return to South Africa on 13 August 2024.

“This will be my first Olympic Games and I am very excited. I am so looking forward to the experience,” expressed Dr Ngwenya.

Dr Ngwenya is a renowned figure in sports medicine, having contributed significantly to various sporting codes beyond football. His impressive resume includes serving as the Chief Medical Officer for Team SA at two Commonwealth Games – in Australia in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022. Although he missed the Tokyo Olympic Games due to personal reasons, his return to the global stage in Paris marks a significant milestone in his illustrious career.

In the realm of football, Dr Ngwenya’s expertise is well acknowledged. He has been honoured by FIFA and CAF multiple times for his exceptional work. In 2022, he served as the Doping Control Officer for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He continued his role as a Doping Control Officer at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Argentina in 2023. Additionally, he held the same position during the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in 2022 and at the recent continental tournament in Côte d’Ivoire, where Bafana Bafana clinched the bronze medal. Dr Ngwenya also serves as a CAF Medical Commission Member.
