South African Football Association (SAFA)
By Sello Masilo
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has informed its staff that their March 2025 salaries will not be paid on the expected date of 25 March. In an internal memo signed by CEO Lydia Monyepao, the delay is attributed to a late payment from one of SAFA’s partners, with salaries now anticipated to be disbursed by 31 March 2025. “We sincerely apologise for this delay and for all the inconveniences that it will cause,” the memo states. This announcement has sparked concern among employees and shed light on the association’s ongoing financial challenges.
Introduction: When Payday Doesn’t Come on Time
Imagine planning your month—paying rent, buying groceries, or covering school fees—only to learn that your salary won’t arrive as promised. That’s the reality facing SAFA employees in March 2025. On 24 March, the association broke the news that staff won’t see their wages on the usual payday of 25 March. Instead, they’ll have to wait until 31 March, a full six days later. The reason? A key partner has delayed a payment to SAFA, leaving the organisation short of cash to meet its payroll obligations.
This isn’t just a logistical hiccup; it’s a personal blow to the men and women who keep South African football running. From administrators to marketing staff, many rely on their monthly pay to survive in a country where the cost of living keeps climbing. In this comprehensive article, we’ll unpack the details of the delay, explore its impact, and dive into the bigger picture of SAFA’s financial health. We’ll also look at what this means for the future of football in South Africa, blending facts with stories to keep it real and relatable.
The Official Word: Inside the CEO’s Memo
On 24 March 2025, SAFA’s CEO, Lydia Monyepao, penned a formal letter to all employees, laying out the situation. Sent from the “Office of the CEO/SG” and addressed to “SAFA Employees,” the letter carried the subject line “Re: Late Payment of March 2025 Salaries.” The SAFA logo sat proudly on the right side of the letterhead, alongside the association’s Johannesburg address: 76 Nasrec Road, Nasrec Extension 3, PO Box 910, Johannesburg 2000. Contact details—phone numbers (011 567 2010 / 011 494-3522), email (CEO@safa.net), and website (www.safa.net)—were neatly listed too.
“Dear Colleagues,” Monyepao began, before delivering the tough news. She explained that salaries, usually paid on the 25th of each month, wouldn’t hit bank accounts on time this March. The culprit? A delayed payment from one of SAFA’s partners. “SAFA does not have sufficient financial reserves to cover the delayed payment at this stage,” she admitted. But there was a silver lining: the partner had promised to settle up before 31 March, meaning salaries should be paid by then.
The letter wrapped up with a heartfelt apology: “We sincerely apologise for this delay and for all the inconveniences that it will cause.”
