South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU)
By Nkosana Khumalo
The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in the Western Cape has expressed deep concern over rising school violence, stating that it mirrors the broader societal issues in communities. This comes after the tragic murder of 54-year-old Ekuthuleni Primary School principal, Jeffrey Sigudla, who was shot and killed outside the school premises in Kraaifontein on Thursday.
A Safe Haven Turned Crime Scene
Sigudla, a respected principal, was gunned down while sitting in his car outside Ekuthuleni Primary School. His murder has shocked the community and reignited calls for better security measures at schools. SADTU provincial secretary Sibongile Kwazi condemned the killing, stressing that schools should be “safe havens, not crime scenes.”
“We have always had the call for security guards at schools. But in my experience, most of these incidents are targeted at certain individuals,” Kwazi said.
Another Shooting in Kraaifontein
Mere minutes after the attack on Sigudla, another shooting occurred outside Fanie Theron Primary School in Windsor Park, Kraaifontein. A 41-year-old man was shot and killed while leaving the school premises in a white Hyundai vehicle. Western Cape police spokesperson, Frederick Van Wyk, confirmed that the suspect approached the vehicle and fired multiple gunshots before fleeing the scene.
Van Wyk stated that police are investigating both incidents, adding that the motive for the murders remains unclear. Authorities have called on the public to assist with any information that could aid in the investigations.
Remembering a Selfless Leader
Jeffrey Sigudla, described by colleagues as a selfless leader and mentor, had dedicated his life to improving education and fostering a positive environment for learners and teachers. His death has left the Ekuthuleni Primary School community devastated.

SADTU Renews Call for School Security
The incidents have renewed SADTU’s demand for increased security measures at schools. Kwazi reiterated the need for security guards and other interventions to ensure the safety of educators and learners.
“These murders highlight the growing danger educators face. It is unacceptable that those who dedicate their lives to shaping the future of our country are put at such risk,” Kwazi said.
Violence Reflects Broader Societal Issues
SADTU believes the violence in schools is a reflection of the broader issues facing South African communities, including crime, inequality, and a lack of resources. “Schools cannot exist in isolation from the communities they serve. The violence in our schools is a mirror of what is happening in our streets and homes,” Kwazi added.
Police Appeal for Information
The Western Cape police have urged anyone with information about the two murder incidents to come forward. Community members with relevant details can contact the nearest police station or use the Crime Stop number to report anonymously.
