The 44th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), held in Harare, Zimbabwe, addressed several pressing regional and international issues, with a strong emphasis on the ongoing crisis in Palestine. The summit, attended by heads of state and government from across the region, voiced deep concern over the continuous attacks on civilians in Gaza, which have led to significant loss of life, property destruction, and worsening humanitarian conditions.

In a communique released after the summit, SADC leaders called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and the initiation of peace talks aimed at finding a lasting solution to the conflict. This call reflects the region’s commitment to upholding peace and human rights, aligning with SADC’s broader goals of promoting stability and development across southern Africa.

The summit also saw the election of Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa as the new Chairperson of SADC, with Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina set to assume the role of incoming Chairperson. In his acceptance speech, President Mnangagwa underscored the importance of regional unity in addressing common challenges, including the economic impacts of sanctions on Zimbabwe and the need for innovative approaches to drive industrialisation in the region.

In addition to international concerns, the summit addressed health issues, particularly the Mpox outbreak. SADC leaders welcomed the World Health Organisation’s declaration of Mpox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and urged member states to enhance disease surveillance and healthcare response mechanisms.

The summit further reiterated its support for peace efforts in Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), commending Angola’s role in mediating the conflict in the eastern DRC. The leaders also discussed the regional electoral calendar, wishing success to countries preparing for elections later this year.
