By Thabo Mosia – Solly Mapaila, General Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP), reaffirmed the party’s firm opposition to any coalition with Democratic Alliance (DA)-led forces in a media briefing on Wednesday. As coalition talks intensify following the 2024 general elections, Mapaila highlighted the SACP’s commitment to protecting the interests of South African workers against the DA’s neoliberal agenda.

The Rejection of Neoliberal Policies

Mapaila criticised the DA’s neoliberal policies, describing them as harmful to South African workers. Among the DA policies in question are retrenchments and opposition to the national minimum wage. “Neoliberal economics, which includes retrenchments and other anti-worker measures, must be rejected,” said Mapaila.

He pointed out that the DA has consistently opposed key worker protections, including the national minimum wage and collective bargaining. The party’s stance on these issues makes it an unsuitable partner for coalition, according to the SACP.

Coalition Talks: A Complex Landscape

The SACP’s strong opposition comes amidst advanced negotiations involving the African National Congress (ANC), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and the DA. Some senior ANC members have revealed that these discussions are progressing, with a coalition between the three parties appearing increasingly likely. Despite this, the ANC’s alliance partner, COSATU, has also rejected any coalition with the DA, accusing the main opposition of obstructing efforts to improve workers’ rights.

Sisulu Calls for “Black Pact” Alliance

Adding to the complexity, ANC veteran Lindiwe Sisulu has publicly called for a “Black Pact” alliance to counter any coalition involving the DA. Sisulu’s statement is seen as a pushback against the potential ANC-DA coalition and reflects the deep divisions within the ANC on the way forward.

Election Results and Coalition Dynamics

The 2024 election results have forced the ANC to consider coalition government options seriously. The ANC garnered 40.18% of the vote, a significant drop from the 57.50% it secured during the 2019 elections. Meanwhile, the DA obtained 21.81%, the MK party 14.58%, and the EFF 9.52%.

2024 Election Results:

  • ANC: 6,459,683 votes (40.18%)
  • DA: 3,505,735 votes (21.81%)
  • MK: 2,344,309 votes (14.58%)
  • EFF: 1,529,961 votes (9.52%)

2019 Election Comparison:

  • ANC: 57.50%
  • DA: 20.77%
  • EFF: 10.79%

The notable decline in the ANC’s share of votes highlights the party’s need to form coalitions to remain in power. Anc NEC member Dr. Zweli Mkhize has voiced concerns that a coalition with the DA could alienate voters, suggesting instead a coalition with the EFF, PA, and MK as a more favourable option.

Internal ANC Discussions and National Strategy

The ANC has announced a special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for 6 June 2024 in Ekurhuleni to discuss coalitions, premier candidates, and the way forward. ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri confirmed that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has recommended a “Government of National Unity.” The concept is to build a unified bloc that includes ANC, DA, EFF, IFP, and PA.

However, the ANC said efforts to engage with the MK party leadership regarding a potential coalition have not yielded any response.
