Fatal Plane Crash
By Karabo Marifi
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has launched an investigation into a tragic plane crash that occurred during the West Coast Airshow near Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape on March 22, 2025. The incident involved an Impala MK 1 jet, piloted by veteran aviator James O’Connel, who was killed on impact. Below is a detailed overview of the event, the ongoing investigation, and key details surrounding the tragedy.
Details of the Crash
The accident took place at approximately 3:00 PM at Saldanha Airfield during the West Coast Airshow. The aircraft, an Impala MK 1 jet registered as ZU-IMP, was performing a solo aerobatic routine when it suddenly lost control. Video footage circulating on social media captured the jet descending rapidly near the hangar buildings at Saldanha Bay Airport before crashing and bursting into flames. James O’Connel, the sole occupant, perished instantly. Fortunately, no spectators were harmed, as the crash occurred within the designated flying zone.
The airshow had been delayed earlier in the day due to low clouds and poor visibility, with flying displays commencing around 2:00 PM. Emergency services responded swiftly, extinguishing the fire, but were unable to save the pilot. The event was halted immediately following the incident.
SACAA Investigation
The SACAA’s Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) has taken charge of the investigation. SACAA spokesperson Sisa Majola confirmed that investigators arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and are collaborating with event safety officers to gather preliminary information. A preliminary report is expected to be released within 30 days, in line with standard procedure.
Majola stated:
“The Accident and Incident Investigations Division has arrived at the site of the accident in Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape. They are working with the event safety officers to collate all of the preliminary information that forms part of the investigation where a report will be issued in 30 days from the day of the accident.”
He added:
“One aspect that I can confirm at this point is that there was one confirmed fatality and it was the pilot on board. All information and all of the necessary updates will be provided in due course.”
The investigation aims to determine the cause of the crash, exploring potential factors such as mechanical failure, pilot error, or weather conditions. Initial reports suggest a sudden loss of altitude during the final maneuver, but no conclusions have been drawn yet.
The Pilot: James O’Connel
James O’Connel was a highly experienced test pilot with over 36 years of flying experience, including 25 years in experimental flight testing. He had a distinguished career with the South African Air Force and was the Chief Flight Instructor for the Test Flying Academy of South Africa (TFASA) at the time of his death. Known for his expertise in both rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, O’Connel was a respected figure in the aviation community and a mentor to many aspiring pilots.
The Aircraft: Impala MK 1
The Impala MK 1 is a historically significant jet trainer and light attack aircraft in South African aviation. Rarely seen at airshows in recent years, its appearance at the West Coast Airshow was a highlight for attendees. O’Connel’s display was intended to showcase the aircraft’s capabilities, adding to the tragedy’s impact on aviation enthusiasts.
Context and Aftermath
The West Coast Airshow, held at Saldanha/Vredenburg Airport, faced challenging weather conditions on the day of the crash, including low clouds and poor visibility common to the coastal region. While it’s unclear if these factors contributed to the accident, they will be examined as part of the investigation.
The aviation community has been deeply shaken by the loss of O’Connel, with tributes highlighting his legacy and contributions. The incident has also prompted discussions about airshow safety and the risks of aerobatic performances.
