SABC rejects claims about paying Tbo Touch R480 000 per month

By Thys Khiba – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) rejected the claims made by Sunday World article conforming that radio presenter Thabo Molefe known as Tbo Touch will be back on air at Metro FM earning R480 000 per month on Sunday.

According to the public broadcaster, the information published by the newspaper is misleading and incorrect.

“The public broadcaster rejects this deliberate misinformation as it is misleading and factually incorrect. The SABC’s GCEO does not get involved in line up negotiations, as that is the job of programme managers and business managers,” said SABC Group Executive Corporate Affairs, Gugu Ntuli.

The SABC confirmed that they do not pay car allowances and other fringe benefits to freelancers.

Informing the media, the SABC indicated that their radio stations are guided by EXCO approved standardized freelance rates, which makes it impossible for them to pay anyone even half of the R480 000.

“Lastly independent contractors do not get involved in soliciting sales and sponsorship, as the SABC does not have a commission scheme that covers individuals outside of Sales staff.”

The publication reported that the public broadcaster radio station has allegedly broken the bank to reemploy Tbo Touch with a ‘whopping salary of half a million a month.

According to Sunday World, the SABC had to bring back Tbo Touch in a desperate bid to get more listenership and lost advertisers.

“Two highly placed sources, who did not want to be named, said Tbo Touch, whose real name is Thabo Molefe, was approached by SABC CEO Madoda Mxakwe early last year, who pleaded with him to return to the station,” writes Sunday World.

The announcement was acknowledged and welcomed on social media by other SABC radio presenters like Lesedi FM Ba2cada Nyakallo Leine.

“I think for Metro FM to have Tbo Touch back on radio was the best thing they did for their listeners… He is very talented and will assist them a lot,” said Ba2cada.
