South Africa Prepares for Severe Snow, Thunderstorms, and Heatwave as Weather Service Issues Warnings
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a comprehensive weather warning, alerting the public to disruptive snow in the Eastern Cape, thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal, and ongoing heatwave conditions across parts of the country. Starting Monday, these extreme weather patterns are expected to impact various regions, creating hazardous conditions for residents and travellers alike.
Disruptive Snow Expected in the Eastern Cape
The high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape are expected to experience disruptive snowfall, as a high-pressure system moves from the far south of the country. According to SAWS, “Snowfalls are expected over the high-lying areas due to a high pressure system ridging from far south of the country, with a southerly to south easterly wind, resulting in cold to very cold and wet conditions over the Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi district municipalities as well as over the Beyers Naude, Blue Crane Route, Matatiele, Umzimvubu, and Raymond Mhlaba local municipalities.”
This snowfall is expected to severely impact daily activities, particularly on the roads. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, as the snow will create treacherous driving conditions that may lead to temporary road closures. Additionally, the severe cold and wet weather could potentially affect agriculture, with risks of crop and livestock losses.
Severe Thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal is expected to face widespread showers and thunderstorms on Monday. These storms may be especially intense in the northern areas of the province, with SAWS cautioning, “Rains will be scattered to isolated in the north except for the extreme north-eastern parts of KZN and may be accompanied by strong damaging winds, excessive lightning, large hail, and heavy downpours.”
This stormy weather poses significant risks, including falling trees, damage to major roads, and power surges that may disrupt electricity supply. Excessive flooding due to heavy rainfall also threatens both human life and livestock, emphasising the need for residents to take safety precautions and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
Heatwave Conditions Across Multiple Provinces
In addition to snow and storms, a persistent heatwave is forecasted to continue affecting parts of North West province, the Free State, northern KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. These regions have been experiencing high temperatures, which are expected to persist, posing health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Compounding these challenges, extremely high fire danger conditions are predicted in central and eastern parts of the Northern Cape, eastern North West, the Free State, Gauteng, and sections of the Western Bushveld in Limpopo. SAWS has advised caution, as the heatwave increases the likelihood of fires spreading rapidly, particularly in areas with dry vegetation.
