SA Weather Service Issues Warnings for Widespread Showers, Heatwaves, and Severe Thunderstorms

South African Weather Service

The South African Weather Service has issued warnings for widespread showers and thundershowers set to affect the central and eastern regions of the country starting Sunday. The wet weather conditions are expected to persist well into the week, bringing disruptive rainfall, localised flooding, and dangerous travel conditions.

Affected Areas

The rainfall will primarily impact the following provinces:

• North West
• Free State
• KwaZulu-Natal
• Southern parts of Mpumalanga
• Gauteng

The service has urged residents and motorists to exercise extreme caution during this period, as the heavy rainfall may cause flooding of low-water bridges and strong currents, posing significant risks to lives and property.

Forecasters’ Alerts

Forecaster Samkelisiwe Thwala highlighted the potential dangers of the rainfall:
“The rainfall distribution is anticipated to remain scattered to widespread along the central and eastern parts of the country. These conditions are likely to be accompanied by persistent disruptive rainfall and localised flooding.”

Motorists returning home after the holidays are advised to monitor weather updates and avoid crossing flooded bridges or roads.

Severe Weather in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) will experience a mix of severe weather conditions, including both extreme heat and severe thunderstorms:

Heatwave Advisory

The SA Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Sunday and Monday, with high temperatures expected to cause discomfort and health risks. Predicted temperatures include:

• Maritzburg: 40°C
• Richards Bay: 40°C
• Ladysmith: 36°C
• Ulundi: 38°C
• Durban: 35°C

Forecaster Ayanda Nsele advised residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses:
“The expected temperatures coupled with humidity along the coast can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and an increased likelihood of wildfires. Stay clear of sun exposure, hydrate as much as possible, and wear protective clothing.”

Severe Thunderstorms and Flood Warnings

The weather service has issued the following alerts:

1. Yellow Level One Warning: Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours are expected in the southwestern parts of KZN on Sunday.
2. Yellow Level Four Warning: Disruptive rainfall, leading to flooding, damage to infrastructure, and mud-based houses, is anticipated over parts of KZN from Sunday afternoon until Monday.

Safety Precautions

Residents across the affected regions are urged to take the following precautions:

• Avoid crossing flooded roads or low-lying bridges.
• Move to higher ground if flooding occurs in your area.
• Ensure you stay hydrated and avoid direct exposure to the sun in extreme heat.
• Secure loose outdoor items to prevent damage from strong winds.
• Remain indoors during severe thunderstorms and unplug electrical appliances to avoid lightning strikes.
• Pay close attention to weather updates and follow instructions from local authorities.
