South African Soldier Sergeant Mbulelo David Ngubane Tragically Killed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has revealed that Sergeant Mbulelo David Ngubane tragically lost his life while serving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The incident occurred last Thursday on 30 May 2024 during a confrontation between M23 rebels and Southern African Development Community (SADC) forces.

A Dedicated Medical Practitioner

Ngubane, aged 39, was a devoted operational medical practitioner within the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS). He was tragically killed while attending to injured soldiers inside a clearly-marked medical ambulance.

“He was shot and killed when the ambulance in which he was tending to injured members was attacked,” stated the SANDF. The organisation highlighted that the ambulance was visibly marked as a medically-equipped vehicle.

A Breach of International Protocols

The SANDF emphasized that this egregious act goes against established international norms for armed conflict. “This unfortunate incident occurred even though the Geneva Convention on the Law of Armed Conflict clearly stipulates categories of protected persons and objects including medical personnel and transport,” elaborated the SANDF.

SANDF’s Mission in the DRC

The South African contingent is part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), aimed at restoring peace, security, and stability in Africa’s second-largest country.

In a similar tragic event this February, Captain Simon Mkhulu Bobe and Lance Corporal Irven Thabang Semono were killed, and three of their colleagues were injured when a mortar bomb hit a South African contingency military base in the DRC.

Official Condolences

The SANDF announced that details of Ngubane’s memorial service and funeral would be communicated in due course. In a joint statement, the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Thandi Modise, alongside Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla, Acting Secretary for Defence Dr Thobekile Gamede, and SANDF Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya, extended their heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Ngubane’s family, friends, and colleagues.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. Sergeant Ngubane was a brave and dedicated member of our force. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten,” the statement read.
