SA Rugby Condemns Milnerton High School Assault: ‘Bullies Not Welcome in Our Sport’
Cape Town – SA Rugby has strongly condemned the shocking assault at Milnerton High School captured in a viral video, emphasizing that bullying has no place in the sport. President Mark Alexander expressed deep concern, calling the incident “unfortunate and unfair” to link to rugby, but made it clear: “Individuals who engage in bullying are not welcome in our sport, which prides itself on respect and integrity.” He urged aspiring young players to take heed, stating such behavior is “totally unacceptable.” The response comes amid outrage over the footage showing a group of learners, including some rugby players, assaulting a fellow pupil – a 16-year-old cancer survivor, according to reports from the victim’s family.
The video, which has sparked widespread condemnation and protests outside the school, led to the precautionary suspension of eight pupils on Wednesday. The Western Cape Education Department appealed for the public to stop sharing the footage to protect the victim’s privacy and reduce trauma. Spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said: “Members of the public are encouraged to refrain from further sharing the footage, as this will increase the trauma experienced by the victim.” She reminded everyone of the legal duty to safeguard minors’ rights.
This incident has ignited debates on school violence, bullying, and the role of sports in building character. Parents and protesters gathered at the school, sharing stories of ongoing issues and calling for stronger action. One mother told media her son faced similar torment, highlighting a broader crisis in addressing aggression among learners.
SA Rugby’s Full Statement: Focus on School Jurisdiction
In his statement, Alexander noted SA Rugby would have welcomed working with the school but stressed the matter falls under the education department’s jurisdiction. “We would have welcomed the opportunity to work with the school regarding this unacceptable behaviour, but the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the education department. I am confident that both the school and the department will take the sternest possible view once all the facts have been established,” he said.
He reiterated rugby’s values: “Our sport, which prides itself on respect and integrity, regardless of its physical nature.” The organization distanced the sport from the “schoolyard incident,” urging a thorough probe by authorities.
One of the alleged perpetrators has represented South Africa at national school rugby level, adding to the scrutiny on how sports bodies handle off-field behavior.
Broader Context: Rising Concerns Over School Bullying
The assault has drawn parallels to other recent cases, fueling calls for better anti-bullying measures. Education officials are investigating, with provisional suspensions in place. The family of the victim, who was reportedly beaten by older boys, has expressed outrage, with the mother highlighting her son’s health struggles as a cancer survivor.
Protesters outside Milnerton High shared chilling testimonies, demanding transparency and empathy from school management. The incident underscores the need for psychosocial support and violence-prevention programs in schools.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie also weighed in, calling for changes to address toxic rugby culture following the video.
Public Reactions: Outrage and Calls for Justice
Social media exploded with demands for accountability, with users condemning the act and urging the school and department to act swiftly. Posts highlighted the irony of rugby players – often seen as role models – involved in such violence. One viral comment read: “That Milnerton High School assault video made me sick – they should ALL be arrested and those rugby boys should never see a Springbok jersey!”
Others criticized shifting blame: “How is everyone getting blamed for the Milnerton High assault and not the parents and society? Parents need to parent.”
