Anti-Apartheid Activist and Photographer Peter Magubane to Receive Special Provincial Official Funeral
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has honored the late Peter Magubane, a well-known photographer and anti-apartheid activist, with a Special Provincial Official Funeral Category 2. Magubane, who passed away at the age of 91 on Monday, will be laid to rest on Wednesday at the Bryanston Methodist Church, with the service beginning at 9am.
Magubane, who gained international recognition for his powerful visual documentation of the fight against apartheid and the early years of freedom in South Africa, leaves behind an unmatched legacy in the field of photojournalism.
Born in 1932 in Pageview, Johannesburg, Magubane began his photographic career while still in school, inspired by the impact of apartheid detailed in Drum magazine. He joined the publication as a driver in 1954 and quickly made the transition to photographer under the mentorship of Jürgen Schadeberg. Throughout his esteemed career, Magubane captured some of the most historic moments in South African history, including Nelson Mandela’s Rivonia trial and the Sharpeville Massacre.
Despite facing arrest and detainment for his work, Magubane remained dedicated to documenting the struggles, triumphs, and everyday lives of people during apartheid and was recognized globally for his unwavering commitment. He received numerous prestigious accolades, including the Order of Luthuli in silver, and was honored with multiple honorary doctorates from esteemed institutions.
