A Russian court has imposed a staggering fine of 2 undecillion rubles on Google, a penalty so large it reaches into incomprehensible figures with 36 zeros. The court’s decision comes as a consequence of Google’s failure to restore the YouTube accounts of 17 Russian channels, including prominent state-affiliated media outlets such as Channel One, Russia 1, and the YouTube channel of Margarita Simonyan. This colossal fine doubles every Sunday, placing immense financial pressure on the tech giant.
To put this amount into perspective, 2 undecillion rubles are estimated to be equivalent to around 20 decillion dollars, a figure with 33 zeros. The fine’s astronomical amount has sparked international debate, with critics questioning its practicality and feasibility.
Conversion of 2 Undecillion Rubles into Dollars and Rands
Calculating the exact value of 2 undecillion rubles in more familiar currencies highlights the sheer scale of this fine:
1. In US Dollars:
With 1 ruble valued at approximately 0.011 USD, 2 undecillion rubles would equate to about 20 decillion dollars.
2. In South African Rands:
Using an exchange rate of 1 ruble to 0.20 ZAR, the fine would amount to a mind-boggling figure in rands, pushing the boundaries of economic scale.
These conversions serve to illustrate the unprecedented nature of the fine, which exceeds not only Google’s financial capacity but also the economic understanding of global markets.
Reason Behind the Fine
The Russian court imposed this penalty after Google failed to comply with its requirements to unblock 17 YouTube channels affiliated with Russian state media. This includes some of Russia’s most influential broadcasters, such as Channel One and Russia 1, as well as the personal channel of Margarita Simonyan, a prominent Russian journalist and head of the RT television network.
According to Russian authorities, the removal of these channels violates the country’s regulations concerning access to information. The court’s decision represents Russia’s stringent approach to enforcing digital sovereignty, ensuring that its state-affiliated media are not restricted by foreign companies.
