RTMC
As the festive season approaches, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued a stern warning to law enforcement officers regarding unacceptable and unethical conduct. The RTMC has announced that anti-corruption units will be out in full force to deal with any instances of corruption or unprofessional behavior.
This warning comes after a recent incident in Mpumalanga, where a traffic officer was sentenced by the Ermelo Regional Court for accepting a bribe. The officer was arrested during Project Arrive Alive on 22 January 2020 after soliciting a R200 bribe from an undercover anti-corruption agent. He was subsequently arrested on 3 March 2021.
The officer pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to a R4,000 fine or 12 months imprisonment. In addition, he received a five-year suspended sentence, provided he avoids any further convictions for the same crime during this period.
The RTMC emphasizes the negative consequences of bribery and corruption in traffic law enforcement. These activities not only tarnish the reputation of the traffic law enforcement fraternity but can also lead to loss of life.
In light of this incident, the RTMC is calling for harsher sentences for officers who engage in bribery. They are also urging citizens to come forward and report any suspected acts of fraud, corruption, or malfeasance to ntacu@rtmc.co.za or by WhatsApp to 083 293 7989.
In addition to legal repercussions, the traffic officer in question faced disciplinary action, resulting in the termination of his employment. Despite contesting the decision at arbitration, he failed to have the disciplinary committee’s ruling overturned.
