The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has praised the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) for swiftly initiating a criminal case against a senior Gauteng traffic police officer. The officer unlawfully interfered with a traffic officer while she was performing her duties.
Incident Captured on Video
This development follows the release of cell phone footage showing the Gauteng traffic officer, in full uniform, swearing and making offensive gestures towards a female EMPD officer. The video depicts the officer using derogatory language, issuing insults, and making threats.
RTMC’s Strong Condemnation
“The RTMC unequivocally condemns the rogue behaviour by the Gauteng traffic officer, especially during Women’s Month when the country is celebrating the contributions and achievements of women. Such unprofessional conduct by a law enforcement officer is both unlawful and unacceptable, and has the potential to undermine the integrity of law enforcement agencies,” RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane stated.
Support for Legal Action
Zwane expressed support for the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety, Sizakele Masuku, who has laid charges against the officer. These charges include crimen injuria, hindering and obstruction of an officer, defeating the ends of justice, and the abuse of authority for personal gain while in uniform and using an official vehicle.
Call for Accountability
Zwane emphasised that the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, as the senior traffic officer’s employer, must also take corrective measures to ensure accountability through internal consequence management processes.
“This occurrence underscores the urgent need for stringent measures against officers who misuse their authority to intimidate and demean others. The RTMC advocates for severe penalties for those who abuse their power, emphasising the importance of upholding the law impartially and with respect,” Zwane said.
