In their highly anticipated opening match of the DStv Premiership, Royal AM and AmaZulu FC battled it out on Saturday evening, resulting in a goalless draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium. Both teams showed promise, but struggled to convert their chances into goals.
Thwihli Thwahla, coming off a successful preseason, began their 2023/24 campaign with a solid display against their KwaZulu-Natal rivals. Although disappointed with the result, the team remains optimistic and aims to secure a victory in their next match against Orlando Pirates in Soweto on Tuesday.
On the other hand, AmaZulu was left to rue their missed opportunities as they failed to capitalize on the few chances created against Royal AM. They will be seeking redemption in their upcoming clash with SuperSport United in Durban on Wednesday.
The opening stages of the match saw Usuthu dominate play, with Augustine Chidi Kwem attempting to use his physical presence to overpower the Thwihli Thwahla defenders, who were masterfully led by Samuel Manganyi. Despite his efforts, Kwem’s chance to break the deadlock in the 23rd minute was denied by goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto, who thwarted his shooting opportunity. The score remained 0-0 at halftime.
Both teams continued to push for an elusive goal in the second half, but struggled to create clear-cut chances. AmaZulu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa made a routine save from a free-kick taken by Mfundo Thikazi in the 56th minute. The tension mounted as the clock ticked on.
In the 72nd minute, AmaZulu were awarded a golden opportunity to secure a late winning goal from an indirect free-kick inside Royal’s box. However, Tercious Malepe’s shot drifted wide of the target, leaving fans disappointed as the game concluded in a 0-0 stalemate.
Lineups:
Royal AM: Mpoto, Manganyi, Sikhakhane, Mogaila, Masuku (Cele 66′), Msomi, Matlaba, Kobedi, Macuphu, Thikazi, Radebe (Sera 79′).
AmaZulu XI: Mothwa, Gumede, Mobara, Mphahlele, Sikhakhane (Human 63′), Brooks, Malepe, Hanamub, Moremi, Jooste, Kwem (Ntuli 79′).
Both teams showcased their potential in what was a tightly contested match. While Royal AM maintains their undefeated start to the season, AmaZulu will be seeking to bounce back and secure their first victory against SuperSport United on Wednesday. Football fans across South Africa eagerly await the next chapter in the DStv Premiership.
