Ronwen Williams Makes History at CAF Awards

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams achieved a historic milestone at the 2024 CAF Awards, held at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakesh, Morocco, on 16 December 2024. The 32-year-old was honoured with both the Interclub Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year awards, becoming the first South African to receive the latter distinction.

Williams’ exceptional performances for both club and country over the past year have been instrumental in earning him these accolades. He played a pivotal role in leading Mamelodi Sundowns to the semifinals of the CAF Champions League, showcasing remarkable skill and consistency between the posts. Additionally, as captain of Bafana Bafana, he guided the national team to a bronze finish in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) earlier this year, further solidifying his reputation as one of Africa’s premier goalkeepers.

In his acceptance speech, Williams expressed gratitude to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the recognition and extended heartfelt thanks to his support system. “I want to take this opportunity to thank my support staff, my family, my parents, my siblings, brother and sister, my partner, as well as my kids, for being real with me throughout my career,” he said. Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledged the coaches who have guided him, stating, “It wasn’t easy, but you guys pushed me to be the player that I am today.” He also emphasized the significance of his achievements in inspiring others: “I know this win will inspire millions and millions of South Africans to believe in themselves, to push boundaries, and never forget your dreams are valid.”

This recognition comes after Williams was shortlisted for the prestigious Yachine Trophy earlier this year, underscoring his status among the elite goalkeepers globally. His accolades at the CAF Awards not only highlight his individual brilliance but also bring honour to South African football on the continental stage.

Williams follows in the footsteps of his Sundowns teammate, Ugandan legend Denis Onyango, who won the Interclub Player of the Year award in 2016. He is also the second South African to clinch the Interclub Player of the Year accolade, with Percy Tau having been named the Interclub Player of the Year in 2023.
