Ronwen Williams
By Sello Masilo
South Africa’s own Ronwen Williams has achieved a groundbreaking milestone, earning a nomination for The Best FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year 2024. Williams, who captains both Mamelodi Sundowns and the national team, Bafana Bafana, is the only player based in Africa to feature among the 11 esteemed nominees. His nomination stands as a testament to his exceptional performances throughout the year, both on the domestic and international stage.
This recognition marks yet another historic moment for Williams, who has solidified his position as one of Africa’s most decorated football talents. Last month, he became the first player from an African club to be nominated for the prestigious Yashin Trophy at the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony, where he secured an impressive ninth place in global rankings.
A Historic Year for Ronwen Williams
Williams’ nomination for The Best FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year is the culmination of an extraordinary year. From his remarkable leadership in South Africa’s domestic league to his commanding performances on the international stage, the 32-year-old goalkeeper has consistently demonstrated his world-class ability.
Yashin Trophy Milestone
In October 2024, Williams made headlines as the first Africa-based player to be nominated for the Yashin Trophy, an accolade that recognises the world’s best goalkeeper. Securing ninth place among global goalkeeping elites, Williams described the moment as surreal: “I went numb. I was speechless and shocked to find out I had been nominated among the world’s elite goalkeepers.”
This milestone not only celebrates his individual brilliance but also highlights the potential of African talent to excel on the global stage.
Recognition at the CAF Awards
Williams’ accolades in 2024 extended beyond FIFA. At the 2024 CAF Awards, he received nominations in three key categories: Player of the Year (Men), Goalkeeper of the Year (Men), and Interclub Player of the Year (Men). These nominations reflect his impact on African football and his crucial role in both Mamelodi Sundowns’ and Bafana Bafana’s successes.
Mamelodi Sundowns and Domestic Dominance
As the captain of Mamelodi Sundowns, Williams has been instrumental in the team’s domestic success. The club recently clinched the 2024-2025 Betway Premiership title (formerly the DStv Premiership), with Williams playing a pivotal role in their defensive dominance. Under his leadership, Sundowns maintained the best defensive record in the league, with Williams delivering numerous clean sheets and match-winning performances.
In May 2024, Mamelodi Sundowns announced an extension of Williams’ contract, securing his services until 2028. This long-term commitment underscores the club’s confidence in his ability to lead both on and off the pitch.
International Contributions
Williams’ influence extends beyond club football. As the captain of Bafana Bafana, he played a crucial role in South Africa’s qualification for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His performances during the qualifiers, including vital saves and leadership during critical moments, were instrumental in ensuring the team’s success.
The goalkeeper’s contribution to South Africa’s international campaigns has elevated his status as a national icon and a leader both on and off the field.
