Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário, widely celebrated as one of the greatest strikers in the history of the sport, has officially announced his candidacy for the presidency of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). His declaration marks a significant move aimed at rejuvenating Brazilian football, restoring its global reputation, and addressing ongoing challenges within the national team setup.
In his statement, Ronaldo emphasised the need to revive Brazil’s position as a football powerhouse. “I want to restore respect for Brazilian football on the global stage. People often stop me on the street and ask me to come back and play because the national team’s situation is not the best right now, both on and off the field,” he said, as reported by Globo.
Ronaldo, affectionately known as O Fenômeno (The Phenomenon), believes his leadership can make a tangible difference by leveraging the wealth of football talent that Brazil continues to produce.
Ronaldo’s Vision for Brazilian Football
Ronaldo’s campaign highlights his commitment to elevating the performance of the Brazilian national team and restoring its prestige. Speaking on the issue, he pointed to Brazil’s immense pool of emerging stars: “We have the best players. We have Vinicius Jr., Neymar, Rodrygo, Estevão, Endrick… we have so much talent. How can we not play well?”
Brazil, a nation synonymous with football success, has struggled to meet expectations on the international stage in recent years. While the Seleção remains a dominant force in South America, inconsistencies and internal management issues have raised concerns over its competitive standing.
Challenges Facing the CBF
Ronaldo’s candidacy comes at a time when the CBF faces widespread scrutiny. Current CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues’ term concludes in 2026, leaving room for reform-minded leadership. Under Rodrigues, controversies surrounding administrative transparency and team management have fuelled discontent among fans and stakeholders.
Ronaldo’s potential presidency could address these challenges, focusing on:
• Player Development: Enhancing grassroots programmes to develop future football stars.
• Coaching Quality: Attracting world-class coaching talent to guide the Seleção.
• Administrative Integrity: Ensuring transparent leadership within the CBF.
Reports have surfaced that Ronaldo is considering an ambitious move to appoint Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as the head coach of the Brazilian national team. Guardiola’s current contract with Manchester City expires in June 2025, aligning with the timeline for potential leadership changes in the CBF.
Should Ronaldo succeed, his strategic focus on leadership and coaching excellence could be a game-changer for Brazil.
Ronaldo’s Football Legacy and Post-Retirement Success
Ronaldo’s storied football career saw him win two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 2002) and claim the prestigious FIFA World Player of the Year award three times. Known for his incredible pace, technical skill, and composure in front of goal, he remains an icon both in Brazil and globally.
Following his retirement, Ronaldo transitioned into football entrepreneurship. He holds majority stakes in Real Valladolid, a Spanish football club, and previously acquired Brazilian club Cruzeiro, where he spearheaded significant reforms. Addressing potential conflicts of interest, Ronaldo confirmed that he would divest from Real Valladolid to comply with CBF regulations.
“We’re negotiating a possible sale very soon and we should close the deal. It won’t be an obstacle to my candidacy,” Ronaldo told Globo Esporte.
