Rev Mo’hau Khumalo Calls Out Hypocrisy in Khusela Diko’s Role on Parliament’s Corruption Committee Amid Fresh SIU Raids
Cape Town – Social commentator and transformation advocate Rev Mo’hau Khumalo has sparked fresh debate with a strong opinion piece slamming ANC MP Khusela Diko’s spot on a key parliamentary committee probing police corruption. In his commentary, titled “The Hypocrisy of Accountability – How Can Khusela Diko Sit on Any Committee of Integrity?”, Khumalo questions how someone once linked to the Tembisa Hospital scandal can now help investigate graft.
This comes just a day after the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) raided the home of businessman Hangwani Maumela, seizing luxury cars tied to the R2.2 billion looting at the hospital. Khumalo ties it back to the 2021 murder of whistleblower Babita Deokaran, who exposed irregular tenders, including one to Diko’s late husband’s company. While Diko was cleared by probes, her role raises eyebrows about true accountability in South Africa’s fight against corruption.
As Parliament’s ad hoc committee hears explosive claims from KwaZulu-Natal police boss Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, Khumalo’s words highlight fears that past scandals still cast long shadows. With ongoing SIU actions and calls for justice in Deokaran’s case, many South Africans are asking if the system can really clean itself up.
Rev Mo’hau Khumalo’s Hard-Hitting Commentary
In his piece, Rev Khumalo praises the SIU for raiding Maumela’s Sandton home but slams the system for letting Diko join the ad hoc committee. He reminds readers of Deokaran’s brave exposure of corruption at Tembisa Hospital, which led to her assassination. “We cannot fight corruption with the same hands that have been tainted by it,” Khumalo writes, calling Diko’s position an insult to Deokaran’s legacy and honest workers.
He argues the setup shows moral rot in politics, where implicated people get recycled into oversight roles. Khumalo ends with a stark question: “The Whistle-Blower Died, the Beneficiary Thrives — What Justice Is This?” His views echo wider frustration over slow progress in graft cases, pushing for Parliament to clean house first.
Fresh SIU Raids Bring Tembisa Scandal Back into Focus
On 9 October 2025, the SIU hit Maumela’s luxury Sandton mansion, taking high-end cars like Lamborghinis as part of the Tembisa probe. Maumela’s firms got over R820 million in tenders from the hospital, part of a R2.2 billion loot exposed by Deokaran. The raid, backed by a court warrant, aims to recover assets from alleged fraud.
Social media buzzed over the flashy finds, with users questioning how such wealth came from public funds. Groups like OUTA welcomed the move, saying it shows the tide turning against syndicates. This action follows years of investigations into tenders for items like baby nappies and cleaning supplies, flagged by Deokaran before her death.
Babita Deokaran: The Whistleblower Who Paid the Ultimate Price
Babita Deokaran, a senior Gauteng health official, was gunned down outside her Johannesburg home on 23 August 2021. Days before, she had raised alarms over R850 million in dodgy tenders at Tembisa, including overpriced goods and links to politicians. Her murder shocked the nation, leading to arrests of hitmen but no masterminds yet charged.
Deokaran’s family and activists keep pushing for justice, with the SIU wrapping up its probe in August 2025. Her story inspired calls for better whistleblower protection and even a documentary highlighting her bravery.
Khusela Diko’s Past Involvement and Clearance
Diko, former presidential spokesperson, stepped aside in 2020 after her late husband’s firm, Royal Bhaca, got a R125 million PPE tender from Gauteng health – later cut to R109 million for Tembisa. Deokaran flagged it as irregular, linking it to corruption networks.
The SIU cleared Diko in 2021, finding no direct wrongdoing on her part, though the tender was flagged for overpricing. She returned to ANC roles and won a National Assembly seat in 2024 elections. Public outcry persists, with many seeing her as a symbol of unpunished graft.
Diko’s Current Role on the Ad Hoc Committee
Diko now serves on Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing claims by Lt Gen Mkhwanazi about police interference and corruption. The committee, which started hearings this week, heard Mkhwanazi’s explosive testimony on 8-9 October 2025. As ANC study group whip, Diko questioned witnesses, drawing Khumalo’s ire.
Critics argue her past makes her unfit for oversight on integrity issues. Diko has defended herself, focusing on her ANC duties.
Public and Political Reactions
Khumalo’s piece has gone viral, with social media users echoing calls for Diko’s removal. Whistleblower groups praise it for keeping Deokaran’s memory alive. ANC insiders say the party stands by Diko, citing her clearance.
Opposition parties like the DA have slammed the setup, calling for ethical reviews of committee members.
