Orlando Pirates
By Sello Masilo
Orlando Pirates secured a second consecutive victory in the Betway Premiership by defeating Magesi FC 1-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The decisive moment came just before halftime when Relebohile Mofokeng scored a remarkable goal, showcasing his growing influence in South African football.
Match Overview
From the outset, the Buccaneers applied relentless pressure on Magesi FC. Goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze was called into action early, making crucial saves to deny efforts from Kabelo Dlamini and Makhehlene Makhaula. The dynamics shifted dramatically in the 39th minute when Magesi’s Lehlogonolo Mokone received a red card for a foul on Mohau Nkota, reducing the hosts to ten men.
Capitalising on their numerical advantage, Orlando Pirates broke the deadlock in the 45th minute. Mofokeng, demonstrating exceptional skill, dribbled past defender Tshepo Kakora and unleashed a curling strike that found the back of the net, sending the visiting fans into jubilation.
Magesi FC had a golden opportunity to equalise shortly before halftime when they were awarded a penalty after Makhaula was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box. However, Wonderboy Makhubu failed to convert, firing his shot wide of the target. The first half concluded with Pirates leading 1-0.
The second half maintained a high tempo, with both goalkeepers showcasing their talents. In the 69th minute, Chipezeze made a fine save to parry Dlamini’s curling free-kick. At the other end, Pirates’ keeper Sipho Chaine produced a smart diving save to deny Tholang Masegela.
Despite their efforts to extend the lead, Pirates were continually thwarted by Chipezeze, who pulled off impressive saves against Dlamini, Patrick Maswanganyi, and Gilberto. Ultimately, Mofokeng’s first-half strike proved sufficient, as the match ended 1-0 in favour of Orlando Pirates.
Implications for the Standings
This victory keeps Orlando Pirates in second place on the league table, now just three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, with a game in hand. The Buccaneers will shift their focus to the upcoming CAF Champions League clash against Stade d’Abidjan in Soweto on 4 January.
Magesi FC’s struggles continue as they remn in 16th position after suffering their sixth league defeat of the season. The Limpopo-based side will aim to end their six-match winless streak when they face TS Galaxy in Mbombela on 4 January.
