Real Madrid have officially confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach on a three-year contract, valid until June 2028. The 43-year-old Spaniard, a former midfield maestro for Los Blancos, returns to the Santiago Bernabéu to succeed Carlo Ancelotti, who departs to manage the Brazilian national team.
A Club Legend Returns
Xabi Alonso’s illustrious playing career at Real Madrid spanned from 2009 to 2014, during which he made 236 appearances and secured six major titles, including the coveted ‘La Décima’ UEFA Champions League triumph in 2014, one La Liga title, two Copa del Rey titles, a Spanish Super Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup.
In a statement, the club expressed its enthusiasm: “Real Madrid C.F. announces that Xabi Alonso will be the coach of Real Madrid for the next three seasons, from June 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028.”
Coaching Credentials
Alonso’s managerial journey began with Real Madrid’s U14 team, followed by a successful stint at Real Sociedad B, where he achieved promotion to the Segunda División. In October 2022, he took the helm at Bayer Leverkusen, transforming the team’s fortunes.
Under his guidance, Leverkusen clinched their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023–24 season, remaining unbeaten throughout the campaign. They also secured the DFB-Pokal and reached the UEFA Europa League final, setting a European record of 51 consecutive matches without defeat.
Official Presentation
Xabi Alonso will be officially presented as Real Madrid’s head coach on Monday, 26 May 2025, at 12:30 PM local time, at the Ciudad Real Madrid training complex. Club president Florentino Pérez will oversee the signing ceremony, after which Alonso will address the media.
Immediate Challenges
Alonso’s first major assignment will be leading Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled to commence next month in the United States. With limited preparation time due to international fixtures, he faces the challenge of quickly instilling his tactical philosophy and assessing the squad’s readiness.
Tactical Outlook
Known for his tactical acumen, Alonso favored a 3-4-3 formation at Leverkusen, emphasizing possession-based football and dynamic wing play. Reports suggest he may implement a similar system at Real Madrid, potentially adapting to the squad’s strengths and addressing areas requiring reinforcement.
