Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya bus services have been suspended until further notice, following concerns from transport stakeholders over newly introduced feeder routes in Soweto. The suspension impacts key Rea Vaya feeder routes, leaving thousands of daily commuters in search of alternative transport options.
The decision to introduce 45-seater feeder buses was part of Rea Vaya’s plan to enhance connectivity within Soweto by providing more accessible transport for routes including F1 (Naledi to Thokoza Park), F2 (Protea Glen to Thokoza Park), F3 (Jabavu to Lakeview), F4 (Mofolo to Orlando Police Station), and F5 (Eldorado Park to Lakeview). However, taxi operators voiced concerns, leading to escalated tensions and disruptions. By Monday afternoon, feeder buses were reportedly intercepted by unidentified individuals as protests over their deployment intensified.
Official Statement and Apology to Commuters
Rea Vaya spokesperson Benny Makgoga issued an apology to affected passengers, advising them to seek alternative transport until the issue is resolved. “Rea Vaya passengers are informed that buses are temporarily suspended until further notice. Some transport stakeholders have raised issues relating to the 45-seater buses that operate in Soweto. We are engaging with stakeholders to establish the cause of the problem. Regular updates on the situation will be given, and we advise passengers to use alternative public transport. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
Transport MMC’s Efforts to Address the Dispute
In response to the disruptions, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport Kenny Kunene has scheduled a meeting with public transport operators on Tuesday. The objective of this meeting is to understand the operators’ concerns and explore possible solutions to resume the Rea Vaya service.
“We do have a meeting with the public transport operators who have raised issues regarding the operation of the 45 PioTrans feeder buses that we have just rolled out,” Makgoga added. “After the meeting, I am confident that a resolution will be reached, and we will issue an official statement.”
Alternative Arrangements and Passenger Advice
For thousands of commuters who rely on Rea Vaya’s Soweto routes for daily transport, the suspension poses significant challenges. Many are left without immediate access to reliable, affordable transport, and some have reported disruptions to their schedules and routines. The City of Johannesburg and Rea Vaya have emphasised that commuters should make alternative transport arrangements until further notice, with updates to be provided as discussions progress.
