Kaizer Chiefs vs TS Galaxy
By Sello Masilo
Ranga Chivaviro’s last-minute goal rescued Kaizer Chiefs in Mbombela, securing a 1-1 draw against TS Galaxy in their Betway Premiership clash at Mbombela Stadium on Monday, 16 December 2024.
Match Overview
Kaizer Chiefs, aiming to rebound from a recent 2-0 defeat to Polokwane City, faced TS Galaxy, who were buoyed by their first home victory of the season against AmaZulu. The encounter was marked by missed opportunities and late drama, culminating in a stoppage-time equaliser that altered the course of the match.
First Half
The Rockets nearly took an early lead when Dzenan Zajmovic’s shot narrowly missed the target in the third minute. The Amakhosi had a golden opportunity to open the scoring just before the half-hour mark. Mduduzi Shabalala’s precise pass found Ashley Du Preez, who, with only the goalkeeper to beat, struck the side netting from close range. Shortly after, Inacio Miguel’s header from a Njabulo Blom cross sailed over the crossbar. TS Galaxy capitalised on these missed chances in the 35th minute. Sphiwe Mahlangu delivered a well-placed cross from the left, and Samukele Kabini’s glancing header found the bottom right corner, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
Second Half
Early in the second half, Shabalala’s misdirected cross grazed the crossbar, nearly catching the TS Galaxy defence off guard. Kaizer Chiefs continued to press for an equaliser, with substitutes Ranga Chivaviro and Mfundo Vilakazi both seeing their efforts blocked by a resolute Galaxy defence. The persistent pressure paid off deep into stoppage time. In the 96th minute, Chivaviro, who had been introduced at halftime, found the back of the net, ensuring the Soweto giants left Mbombela with a valuable point.
Post-Match Implications
This draw had significant implications for both teams’ standings. Kaizer Chiefs climbed back into the top eight, moving above Sekhukhune United and Golden Arrows on goal difference to secure seventh place. TS Galaxy also made progress, overtaking Cape Town City to reach the 10th position.
