Acting Minister Maropene Ramokgopa Rallies Nation for Bafana Bafana’s World Cup Qualifier in Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein – Acting Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Maropene Ramokgopa, has called on all South Africans to rally behind Bafana Bafana as they continue their quest for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Bafana Bafana is set to face Zimbabwe in a highly anticipated match at the Free State Stadium on Tuesday, 11 June 2024.

“This will be the first time Bafana Bafana plays an international match in Bloemfontein since their victory against France in the 2010 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Football supporters in the Free State are famous for their passionate support during matches,” said the Minister. “I welcome the return of international football to the Free State and call on South Africans to fill up Free State Stadium and get behind Bafana Bafana, as our national team continues its march to qualify for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup.”

On Saturday, Premier of the Free State, Hon Mxolisi Dukwana, along with MEC for the Department of Education and Acting MEC for the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Hon Makalo Mohale, and Executive Mayor of Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Cllr Gregory Nthatisi, were present at the Bram Fischer International Airport to welcome the national team and SAFA President, Danny Jordaan.

The usually quiet airport was transformed into a bustling hub, with travellers stopping to catch a glimpse of the team. At exactly 16:11, the pride of the nation, led by SAFA President Danny Jordaan and coach Hugo Broos, arrived amidst cheers and excitement.

Mr Jordaan took a moment to thank the gathered crowd for their unwavering support, reinforcing the importance of community backing for the national team’s success. “Your support means everything to us. Let’s unite to make South Africa proud,” he said.

Amongst the excited supporters was 16-year-old Someleze Nelani from Vista Park. The Grade 11 learner from Dr. Viljoen School patiently waited with his parents to see the team. “I’m a staunch Orlando Pirates supporter and my favorite player is Relebohile Mofokeng,” said Nelani, thrilled for the opportunity to see his idol in person.

The Premier, Acting MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, and the Executive Mayor, alongside other dignitaries and officials, welcomed the team with open arms, celebrating the significant moment for South African football.
