Minister in the Presidency responsible for Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, will be visiting all 14 Eskom power stations to engage with the management, workers, and unions.

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, made a focused visit to the Camden Power Station in Mpumalanga on Thursday, marking yet another phase in a series of ministerial assessments of power facilities.

This visit, part of the second installment of ministerial tours aimed at evaluating and improving the efficiency of power stations, brought to light the specific challenges faced by the Camden facility. Among the issues discussed, boiler tube leaks were highlighted as a significant concern; however, assurances were given regarding the measures being undertaken to address these problems.

Dr Ramokgopa expressed optimism about the future of the facility, noting its crucial role in the national energy mix and its potential to overcome current setbacks. “We are more than confident that the station will continue to return to its best performance, restore its previous glory and contribute immensely to the resolution of load shedding in the country,” Dr Ramokgopa stated.

He further reinforced the importance of Camden Power Station, describing it as “key and indispensable” to the energy equation in South Africa. This acknowledgement underscores the value placed on all generation units, especially those with a long service history, in ensuring the nation’s energy security.

Additionally, the Minister applauded the recent positive strides made by Eskom, remarking on a period of at least two consecutive weeks free from load shedding. This achievement was attributed to the diligent efforts of Eskom’s workforce, including the noteworthy contributions from the management team at Camden led by General Manager Justice Bore.

“The kind of results that we are seeing today is in large part as a result of the contribution by the totality of the workforce of Eskom. We are exceptionally grateful to the work of [Camden General Manager Justice Bore] and his management team, so we are looking forward to finally resolving the load shedding question,” said Dr Ramokgopa.

As part of the government’s ongoing endeavours to mitigate the impact and frequency of load shedding, Dr Ramokgopa’s visit represents a crucial step in directly addressing the operational challenges within South Africa’s power generation sector. The proactive stance of engaging directly with power stations and their management teams is indicative of a comprehensive strategy aimed at ensuring the nation’s energy sustainability and reliability.
