“Ramaphosa: The Hand on the Trigger for the DA” – Rev. Mo’hau Khumalo’s Explosive Opinion

South Africans are being urged to confront an uncomfortable truth about the state of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) under President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership. In a powerful opinion piece titled “Ramaphosa: The Hand on the Trigger for the DA”, Reverend Mo’hau Khumalo argues that what has been branded as the ANC’s renewal project is, in reality, a systematic dismantling of the movement — with the Democratic Alliance (DA) playing the lead role and Ramaphosa acting as the executioner.

A Painful Truth About ANC Renewal

According to Khumalo, the narrative of ANC renewal is nothing more than a façade. He contends that the DA has consistently driven probes, referrals, and legal actions against ANC leaders, past and present, in a manner that weakens the movement’s credibility.

“South Africans must awaken to a painful truth: what we witness under President Cyril Ramaphosa is not the renewal of the African National Congress (ANC), but its systematic dismantling through the agenda of the Democratic Alliance (DA). The DA’s fingerprints are all over the public humiliation, legal harassment, and political weakening of ANC leaders — past and present. Ramaphosa has simply positioned himself as the hand that pulls the trigger while the DA loads the bullets,” Khumalo wrote.

The DA’s Long History of Targeting ANC Leaders

Khumalo laid out a detailed timeline of DA-driven actions against ANC heavyweights. Each incident, he argued, was not just an attack on an individual but part of a broader strategy to delegitimise the ANC.
• Jacob Zuma: From Nkandla litigation in 2014 to ongoing legal battles linked to the State Capture Commission, Zuma has been one of the DA’s main targets.
• Ace Magashule: His asbestos case and suspension in 2021 were hailed by the DA as victories for clean governance, yet no trial has materialised.
• Gwede Mantashe: Faced ethics complaints from the DA in 2019 and 2021 over bribery allegations.
• Fikile Mbalula: The DA welcomed IPID investigations in 2018 and later celebrated a 2024 contempt of court ruling against him.
• Nomvula Mokonyane: Repeatedly linked to Bosasa scandals via DA referrals.
• Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula: Faced sustained DA pressure leading to her 2021 removal over corruption allegations.
• Bongani Bongo: Criminal complaints were laid against him in 2017.
• DD Mabuza: Targeted in 2019 over corruption scandals in Mpumalanga.
• Tony Yengeni: The DA revived calls for accountability over his fraud conviction in both 2016 and 2019.
• Paul Mashatile: Scrutinised in 2023 for his lifestyle and alleged ties to tenderpreneurs.
• Pule Mabe: Faced DA complaints in 2018 during harassment allegations.
• Supra Mahumapelo: The DA called for his removal in 2018 over corruption and mismanagement.
• Panyaza Lesufi: Investigated by the DA in 2022 over Gauteng tender irregularities.
• Lebogang Maile: Faced DA probes in 2019 for irregularities in Gauteng municipalities.
• Dakota Legoete: Called out by the DA in 2020 over ANC funding scandals.
• Mzwandile Masina: Referred to Parliament’s Ethics Committee in 2019 over mismanagement in Ekurhuleni.

Khumalo emphasised that “every one of these dates is a nail in the coffin of what used to be the liberation movement.”

Ramaphosa’s Role in the Alleged Strategy

Khumalo argued that Ramaphosa has consistently benefited from these DA-led offensives. While senior ANC figures are weakened through investigations and suspensions, Ramaphosa emerges unscathed, positioning himself as a leader championing accountability.

He accused Ramaphosa of “smiling as the DA does the dirty work,” while simultaneously applauding DA governance in the Western Cape and turning a blind eye to allegations of corruption in DA-controlled municipalities.

“This is not renewal. This is replacement,” Khumalo insisted. “The ANC is being hollowed out, not by its external enemies, but by its own leader collaborating with them.”

The Bigger Picture – ANC at a Crossroads

The opinion paints a picture of an ANC in crisis, facing erosion from within as well as external opposition. Khumalo warned that the ANC’s house is being dismantled “brick by brick,” with the DA supplying the arsenal and Ramaphosa acting as the “hand on the trigger.”

He concluded with a stark warning: the ANC’s credibility as a liberation movement is at risk of being permanently destroyed unless members recognise the political game at play.
