Ramaphosa and SA Rugby Team
President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed the Springboks’ victory in the 2023 Rugby World Cup as a powerful symbol of transformation in South Africa.
The President reflected on the historic win in 1995, when former Boks captain Francois Pienaar and President Nelson Mandela lifted the Webb Ellis Cup, a moment that held deep meaning for the newly democratic nation. Ramaphosa emphasized that this year’s win is equally monumental, given the progress South Africa has made in terms of racial inclusivity.
The Springboks clinched their fourth Rugby World Cup victory on the 28th of October in Paris, France. The President extended his warmest congratulations and welcomed the team at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where scores of Springbok supporters from diverse backgrounds gathered to join in the celebrations.
The atmosphere was electric as the crowd chanted the names of their favorite players and proudly displayed their Springbok jerseys.
In his address, Ramaphosa recognized the significance of the Springboks’ achievement in uniting the nation. The President pointed out that the words “Amabokobo” and “Go Bokke” have been heard from all corners of the country, spoken by people of all races and ethnicities.
He noted that, for the past eight weeks, South Africa has been awash with the colors of green and gold, with even those who had not previously followed rugby joining in the excitement and displaying a newfound knowledge and passion for the game.
Ramaphosa acknowledged the challenges facing the country but stressed that the Springboks’ victory has brought a renewed sense of optimism and hope. He emphasized that this triumph goes beyond the sporting field; it represents the nation’s journey towards unity and transformation.
The President praised the team and said that they serve as an inspiration to every young boy and girl in South Africa, regardless of their race, who now know that they can aspire to become like their rugby heroes.
The Springbok Trophy Tour, which began in Pretoria, will journey through Cape Town, Durban, and the Eastern Cape, giving communities across the country the opportunity to celebrate with the team.
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi expressed his gratitude to South Africans for their unwavering support, emphasizing that diversity is the strength of the nation and that working together is crucial for the progress of South Africa.
South African Rugby Union President Mark Alexander echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the millions of South Africans who passionately supported the team, and emphasizing the historic significance of their fourth Rugby World Cup win.
