Johannesburg – President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a job creation plan during his address at the ANC Siyangoba Rally held at the FNB Stadium in Soweto. The rally drew thousands of ANC supporters and members.

Under a clear blue sky, Ramaphosa delivered a resonate address, highlighting the African National Congress’s (ANC) commitment to leading South Africa towards a better future. With pivotal elections on the horizon, Ramaphosa emphasised the critical choice facing South Africans on 29th May: to continue progressing forward with the ANC or regress to a troubled past.

A Legacy of Transformation

“From the streets of Soweto, we draw inspiration from leaders like Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, and many others who shaped our fight for freedom,” Ramaphosa began, acknowledging the legacy of exemplary leaders whose sacrifices have paved the way for today’s democratic South Africa.

The President’s discourse was not merely a recital of names but a call to remember the collective struggles and victories that characterise the ANC’s history. He commended the efforts of ANC leaders, volunteers, and alliances, including COSATU, SANCO and the SACP, for their unwavering dedication to grassroots engagement during the campaign.

“Our Jobs Plan”: A Vision for Employment

At the heart of his speech was a robust jobs plan designed to address the stark employment issues facing the nation. “We will implement a jobs plan to put more South Africans to work. We will build our industries and invest in an inclusive economy,” Ramaphosa proclaimed, a pledge that resonated deeply given the nation’s high unemployment rates.

The plan includes developing public works programmes, enhancing early childhood development, supporting teacher assistants, and bolstering local industry sectors such as agriculture, mining, and tourism. Moreover, the President highlighted the importance of new industries, particularly in renewable energy and technology, predicting they would be pivotal in creating future jobs.

Economic Inclusion and Support

Ramaphosa acknowledged the myriad struggles of small business owners and emphasised the ANC’s commitment to supporting micro-enterprises, especially those owned by women, youth, and persons with disabilities. “We will encourage empowerment, employment, entrepreneurship and training through set-asides in the public and private sectors,” he stated.

Addressing the contentious issue of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), the President reassured the masses of the ANC’s steadfast commitment to promoting employment equity, warning against parties who aim to dismantle these essential policies.

Ensuring Basic Services and Social Security

A critical part of Ramaphosa’s address was his focus on social services. From land reform to healthcare, the ANC promises to amplify efforts towards equitable access to resources. Highlighting water projects already in motion, he reaffirmed the ANC’s objective to provide reliable water supply to rural areas.

He also emphasised defending the National Minimum Wage, “We will staunchly defend the National Minimum Wage, ensuring it keeps pace with inflation,” while criticising rival parties that threaten to dismantle this pivotal legislation.

Fighting Corruption and Upholding Integrity

Ramaphosa did not shy away from the nation’s battle against corruption. Recent advancements, such as the establishment of the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate, reflect the ANC’s commitment to rooting out corruption. “Corruption is a crime against the people. We will ensure accountability and consequences,” he asserted.

Promoting Social Justice

The President also highlighted the ANC’s dedication to defending the rights of all South Africans, combating racism, gender-based violence, and promoting inclusivity. Efforts to implement the National Health Insurance (NHI) and enhance early childhood development schools underscore the ANC’s prioritisation of social justice.

An Appeal for Unity and Progress

As his speech drew to a close, President Ramaphosa exhorted supporters to join forces. He underscored the ANC’s role as the only viable force capable of uniting diverse social groups to foster progress.

“In these times where we face many challenges, it is only by working together will we be able to achieve the South Africa we envision,” Ramaphosa concluded, urging every ANC member, leader, and supporter to commit to ensuring a significant victory on election day.
