President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Kigali yesterday to take part in the ceremonies marking the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, which will be observed today.
The genocide, a somber chapter in Rwanda’s history, began on 7 April 1994, and over the span of 100 days saw the massacre of over a million people, primarily from the ethnic Tutsi group. Rwanda has, since then, dedicated this date annually to remember the lives lost and reflect on the grim events, with the Government playing host to a formal observance marking the commencement of this period of mourning.
Scheduled to occur in Kigali on Sunday, 7 April 2024, this year’s official ceremony of remembrance involves President Ramaphosa participating in a noteworthy wreath-laying ceremony at the Kigali Genocide Memorial. He will also attend the National Commemoration ceremony, with the day’s solemn observances culminating in a Night Vigil held at the BK Arena in Kigali, symbolizing the nation’s collective reflection and mourning.
Upon his arrival, President Ramaphosa engaged in a crucial bilateral meeting with his Rwandan counterpart, President Kagame. This meeting underscores the ongoing and deepening diplomatic relations between South Africa and Rwanda, a bond officially cemented in 1995 and further reinforced with the signing of a General Cooperation Agreement in 1999.
Vincent Magwenya, a spokesperson for the Presidency, commented on the robust bilateral relationship: “Since the inauguration of the Joint Cooperation Commission in Pretoria on 22 June 2001, we’ve seen significant progress in various spheres including institution and capacity building, health, and education. Moreover, South African companies have made considerable investments in Rwanda, indicating the strength and mutual benefits of our bilateral relations.”
