President Cyril Ramaphosa met with General Mohamed Dagalo, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan at the Mahlamba Ndlopfu official residence in Pretoria on January 4, 2024 (Today), to discuss the ongoing peace mediation efforts in Sudan.
During the meeting, President Ramaphosa welcomed the briefing from General Dagalo and praised the role of the African Union and IGAD, chaired by Djibouti, in mediating between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. He also highlighted the importance of the involvement of the people of Sudan and civil society in finding a lasting solution to the security and political challenges in the country.
Additionally, President Ramaphosa expressed South Africa’s support for the upcoming face-to-face dialogue between General Dagalo and General Burhan. He reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized the importance of initiating dialogue for a permanent cessation of hostilities in Sudan.
The meeting between President Ramaphosa and General Dagalo signifies South Africa’s commitment to supporting peace efforts in Sudan and its willingness to engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in the region.
