Nota Baloyi on President Cyril Ramaphosa

South African Music Executive , Nota Baloyi, has levied serious accusations against President Cyril Ramaphosa, saying his leadership has killed the country’s music festivals and entertainment scene. Baloyi, who is known for his forthrightness and no-holds-barred commentary, didn’t mince his words when discussing the influence of liquor companies on the music industry and the perceived negative changes since Ramaphosa took office.

“All the artists sell poison. All the youth are being told to drink their lives away, at every turn. Right now the youth are waiting until 11:00 when bars open. Their role model is Skomota!” Baloyi expressed with palpable concern for the younger generation’s influences and the overarching messages they are receiving from the music scene.

The music executive delved deeper into his critique by drawing comparisons between the Ramaphosa and Zuma administrations, highlighting a particular downturn in the affordability and accessibility of international music stars due to the current economic climate. “Under Zuma, you could afford to pay Rick Ross to fly to South Africa & wish your grandmother a happy birthday… Under Ramaphosa, you get on IG live for bottles of Belaire. Hype got to the head & the moves show it. The best years for SA music were under Zuma, 2014-18. What went wrong?” Baloyi questioned, pining for a bygone era that he perceives as the golden years of South African music.

Furthermore, Baloyi’s criticism extended into the broader economic landscape under President Ramaphosa, with a stern focus on the currency devaluation and its impact on the entertainment and ancillary sectors. “You need to assess your worth in dollars because that is still the most powerful currency. Under Zuma, a million was $80,000 under Cyril it’s currently $52,500. Imagine how hard importers are taking it? All the girls that sold weaves straight selling now… Ramaphosa Economy!”

Baloyi is a staunch supporter of the MK Party and the former president, Jacob Zuma,
