Justice Yvonne Mokgoro
President Cyril Ramaphosa has accorded the late retired Constitutional Justice Yvonne Mokgoro, the honour of a Special Official Funeral Category 1.
The revered judge, who passed away on the 9th of May, 2024, after succumbing to health complications spurred by a serious car accident in April 2023, is to be celebrated in a manner befitting her distinguished career and sterling contribution to the nation’s jurisprudence.
The announcement came as a source of profound respect and reflection on Justice Mokgoro’s illustrious role as one of the pioneering justices of the Constitutional Court, which came into being in 1994, the dawn of South Africa’s democracy.
Vincent Magwenya, the spokesperson for President Ramaphosa, detailed the elements of the Special Official Funeral Category 1, exclusively reserved for personages of her caliber. This includes ceremonial elements orchestrated by the South African National Defence Force and the national flag being flown at half-mast across the country from the morning of Sunday, 19th May until the twilight of her funeral on Thursday, 23rd May 2024.
Born in 1951, Justice Mokgoro’s journey was marked by a robust commitment to justice, equality, and the rule of law. A testament to her pioneering spirit was her appointment as the first black woman judge in the Constitutional Court, breaking ceilings and setting a precedent in what was historically a male-dominated field. Her academic contribution spanned globally, having taught law across universities in South Africa, the United States, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Justice Mokgoro was not just a legal luminary; her involvement with international women’s legal associations underscored her commitment to advocating for the rights of women and children.
In celebration of her life and legacy, Women For Change, a vocal non-profit organisation championing the constitutional rights of women and children in South Africa, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to extol her virtues. They praised her unwavering dedication to human rights and justice, her advocacy for the marginalized, and her indelible impact on the legal framework. The organisation highlighted that Justice Mokgoro’s legacy will serve as a beacon of inspiration, urging all to continue in her spirit of relentless pursuit for justice and equality.
