BRICS SUMMIT

In a recent address to the nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized South Africa’s support for the expansion of the membership of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa).

As leaders of the bloc gathered in South Africa for the annual summit, the expansion of BRICS became a pivotal topic of discussion.

Over 30 Heads of State and Government from across Africa attended the summit, and more than 20 countries have formally applied to join BRICS, showing widespread interest in becoming part of the BRICS family.

China, one of the current BRICS members, echoed South Africa’s sentiment, with Ambassador Chen Xiaodong describing BRICS as a “big family of good partners.” President Ramaphosa stressed the importance of building partnerships with other countries that share the same aspirations and perspectives as BRICS.

The President also highlighted the significant role BRICS plays in the global economy, politics, and development cooperation. He noted that an expanded BRICS would represent a diverse group of nations united by a common desire for a more balanced global order.

President Ramaphosa pointed out the positive opportunities that membership in BRICS has created for South Africa. The strategic relationship between South Africa and China, for example, has led to various agreements and strengthened trade and investment ties.

South Africa has also benefitted from funding by the New Development Bank, a BRICS establishment that has financed infrastructure projects in South Africa worth R100 billion.

The President further emphasized the need for BRICS to partner with Africa, unlocking opportunities for trade, investment, and infrastructure development in the continent.

The President highlighted the significance of the BRICS Summit against the backdrop of a complex and polarized world. He called for an open and rules-based global governance system, trade, financial, and investment system, advocating for multilateralism amid competing power blocs.

In addition to African leaders, several leaders from countries of the Global South, including the Caribbean, South America, the Middle East, and various Asian regions, were welcomed to the summit.

President Ramaphosa underscored South Africa’s active role in promoting peace in Africa by supporting efforts in Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He also emphasized the country’s non-aligned position, where it supports the struggles of the oppressed and marginalized worldwide.

As part of its effort to strengthen economic ties between African countries and the United States, South Africa invited numerous African trade ministers and senior US representatives to the upcoming African Growth and Opportunity Act forum.

The article concludes by announcing President Xi Jinping’s State Visit to South Africa and highlighting the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between South Africa and China, governed by a Ten-Year Strategic Programme of Cooperation.

Overall, South Africa’s support for BRICS expansion and its commitment to fostering partnerships for global development and stability were reiterated by President Ramaphosa, emphasizing the significance of the BRICS Summit in shaping international events for years to come.
