President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa has concluded his participation in the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, expressing satisfaction with the summit’s outcomes and confidence in the newly elected leadership.
A New Era of Leadership
The Assembly, held under the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” saw the election of Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, as the new Chairperson of the AU Commission. Youssouf, who has served as Djibouti’s top diplomat since 2005, succeeds Chad’s Moussa Faki Mahamat, marking a significant leadership transition for the continent.
President Ramaphosa extended his congratulations to Chairperson Youssouf and the newly appointed Deputy Chairperson, Ambassador Salma Malika Haddadi. He expressed confidence that their leadership will steer the AU towards achieving its continental aspirations.
South Africa’s Pride in Continental Representation
In a moment of national pride, South Africa’s own Ms. Lerato Mataboge was appointed as the new Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy. Mataboge, with a distinguished background in law and international relations, has committed to addressing the continent’s infrastructure challenges and harnessing its vital mineral resources for technological advancement.
Addressing Continental Peace and Security
The Assembly deliberated extensively on the state of peace and security across Africa, with a particular focus on the escalating conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Heads of State expressed grave concern over the situation, especially following the tragic loss of 14 South African soldiers in Goma during clashes with the M23 rebel group.
President Ramaphosa, addressing the media, conveyed his satisfaction with the leaders’ collective commitment to resolving the conflict. He emphasized the urgent need for inclusive negotiations and political dialogue as the sole pathway to sustainable peace on the continent.
South Africa’s Role on the Global Stage
The Assembly acknowledged South Africa’s upcoming presidency of the G20, marking the first time an African nation will host the summit. Leaders across the continent pledged their support for the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled to take place later this year in Johannesburg. This milestone reflects Africa’s growing influence in global economic discussions and decision-making processes.
Bilateral Engagements and Future Discussions
On the sidelines of the summit, President Ramaphosa engaged in bilateral meetings with several African counterparts to discuss issues of mutual concern and strengthen diplomatic ties.
The Assembly’s agenda also encompassed discussions on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the activities of the Africa Centre for Disease Control, infrastructure development, and institutional reforms. These topics are pivotal to advancing the continent’s development and integration efforts.
A Call for Unity and Progress
As the 38th AU Summit drew to a close, President Ramaphosa reiterated the importance of unity, collaboration, and proactive leadership in addressing Africa’s challenges. He expressed optimism that, under the new AU leadership, the continent is poised to make significant strides towards peace, prosperity, and justice for all Africans and people of African descent.
In the face of ongoing conflicts and global challenges, the summit’s resolutions underscore a collective commitment to fostering stability, development, and equitable growth across Africa.
Honouring the Fallen Heroes
The recent loss of 14 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers in Goma has cast a somber shadow over the nation. These brave individuals were part of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), striving to bring peace to a region plagued by unrest.
The SANDF has reassured the public of the safety of the remaining troops in the DRC. Admiral Prince Tshabalala stated, “I can reassure South Africa that our soldiers are safe and there is nothing that they are short of.”
The fallen soldiers’ remains have been repatriated, and the nation mourns their sacrifice. Memorial services are being held to honour their bravery and dedication to peacekeeping efforts.
Regional Implications of the DRC Conflict
The situation in the eastern DRC remains volatile, with the M23 rebel group’s activities causing widespread concern. The capture of Goma by M23 rebels has intensified tensions, leading to significant civilian displacement and loss of life.
The African Union, under its new leadership, faces the formidable task of addressing these challenges. The recent summit underscored the necessity for coordinated regional efforts to restore peace and stability in the DRC.
South Africa’s Commitment to Peacekeeping
Despite the recent losses, South Africa remains steadfast in its commitment to peacekeeping missions in Africa. The government has emphasized the importance of its role in promoting stability on the continent and has pledged continued support to MONUSCO and other peacekeeping initiatives.
Defence Minister Angie Motshekga stated, “Our presence in the DRC is crucial for the stability of the region. We owe it to our fallen heroes to continue their mission and strive for peace.”
