Tembisa Hospital
President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted the South African Special Investigating Unit (SIU) the authority to conduct a thorough investigation into corruption allegations at Tembisa Hospital.
This decision comes after the SIU’s preliminary report in 2022, which raised concerns about the hospital’s supply chain management.
The investigation will also scrutinize over R1 billion in payments that have been disbursed from the hospital’s funds. This is a significant step towards holding accountable those responsible for any misappropriation of public resources.
The need for this investigation was reiterated by whistleblower Babita Deokraran, who bravely highlighted dubious transactions at the hospital.
Tragically, she was killed almost two years ago, and the trial against her alleged killers is still ongoing. Her sacrifice serves as a reminder of the risks involved in exposing corruption and the importance of unearthing the truth.
