President Cyril Ramaphosa
By Thabo Mosia
Cape Town, South Africa – President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued a warning to criminals, declaring that law enforcement agencies are determined to bring justice to those who terrorise communities and businesses. His statement was made during a significant signing ceremony of the Cooperation Agreement to Combat Crime in Cape Town on Friday, marking a pivotal moment in the government’s ongoing efforts to address the escalating crime rates in the Western Cape.
A United Stand Against Crime
In his address, President Ramaphosa emphasised the government’s commitment to tackling the scourge of crime, particularly in the Western Cape, where gang violence, extortion, and drug trafficking have wreaked havoc on communities. The President stated, “By signing this cooperation agreement, we are saying enough is enough. Genoeg is genoeg. Kwanele. Our mothers and daughters here in the Cape are tired of living in fear. We will ensure that criminals are caught and removed from our streets.”
The cooperation agreement is a collaborative effort involving national, provincial, and local governments, alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS), community organisations, and private security companies. This united front aims to enhance public safety by sharing technology, resources, and information, ultimately improving the state of public policing in the region.
Operation Shanela: A Strategic Response
The President highlighted the success of Operation Shanela, a law enforcement initiative launched in March 2023, which has already resulted in the arrest of over 800,000 suspects for various serious crimes, including murder, rape, and kidnapping. Ramaphosa praised the SAPS for their relentless efforts in reclaiming the streets from criminals and acknowledged the critical role of specialist task teams in disrupting drug operations and seizing illicit firearms.
In the Western Cape alone, more than 3,000 firearms were confiscated during police operations over the past year, and significant drug busts have taken place, including the interception of cocaine worth an estimated R252 million in Stilbaai. These efforts underscore the government’s determination to address crime effectively and protect communities from the pervasive threats posed by gangs and extortionists.
A Call to Action
President Ramaphosa did not mince his words when addressing the criminal elements plaguing the province. He referenced a recent incident where four would-be extortionists were killed in a shootout with police, reiterating that the government would not tolerate such activities. “We are now taking the war against those who extort money. We are taking the war against the construction mafia. We are taking the war against gangsters. We are now going to take you on and make sure that you are brought to justice,” he asserted.
The President also called on residents and community members to actively participate in the fight against crime. He urged them to join forces with law enforcement agencies and the government to reclaim their communities from those who spread violence and discord. “We cannot win the war against crime without you. Let us work together to take back our communities from those who cause violence and criminality,” Ramaphosa concluded.
