President Ramaphosa and President Putin
In a gesture that reaffirms the ties between South Africa and Russia, President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his congratulations to Vladimir Putin on the occasion of his re-election as President of the Russian Federation. President Putin’s victory comes after a three-day electoral process that amassed support from regions including parts of Ukraine currently under Russian military control.
President Ramaphosa acknowledged the unwavering partnership between the two nations on various multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, G20, and BRICS. “The commitment of South Africa and the Russian Federation to mutual cooperation at the multilateral level continues to be a cornerstone of our engagement on the global stage,” he exclaimed.
In his remarks, President Ramaphosa alluded to South Africa’s commitment to global stability and peace, asserting that the nation will remain in dialogue with both the Russian Federation and Republic of Ukraine to foster a durable resolution to the ongoing tensions between the neighbours.
The election that saw Putin clinch over 87 percent of the vote has been depicted by Moscow as evidence of the Russian people uniting behind their leader amidst the protracted offensive in Ukraine. The result is anticipated to consolidate Putin’s hold on power in a nation where dissent has increasingly become a perilous pursuit.
Since steering the helm in 1999, his tenure has marked a relentless journey to outlast any Russian leader’s rule in over two centuries. In a jubilant address at a Red Square celebration acknowledging the 10th anniversary of Crimea’s annexation from Ukraine, Putin proclaimed, “Hand in hand, we will move forwards and this will make us stronger… Long live Russia!”
In a preceding event, Putin stood in solidarity with his electoral adversaries, all of whom extended their congratulations at a Kremlin rendezvous. In contrast, Putin’s weightiest political rivals either lay deceased or have been relegated to prisons or exile, a testament to the political landscape that shadowed this election.
Patriotism fueled calls to the Russian populace to partake in the vote, which was widely perceived as a civic duty. Viktoria, a 23-year-old IT professional expressed, “Vladimir Vladimirovich is the foundation of our country,” typifying the sentiment of many Russians as they congregated at the Red Square concert. Elena, a 64-year-old economist, shared, “I am not surprised by the result because I think that any citizen who respects our country voted for Putin.”
While international acclaim rolled in from Putin’s allies such as China, India, and a cadre of Middle Eastern leaders lauding his electoral success, Western powers held a diametrically opposing view. The West declared the vote as non-credible and underscored the absence of authentic opposition.
The United States, Britain, and a confluence of Western nations chastised the electoral process, with U.S. State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel labeling the election as “an incredibly undemocratic process” and British Foreign Minister David Cameron deeming the election “illegal” given its occurrence on Ukrainian territory under occupation.
Meanwhile, voices from across the globe, including North Korea’s Kim Jong Un to Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, in addition to leaders from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Mali, Chad, Niger, Venezuela, and Cuba, sent their words of encouragement to Putin. These messages underscored a range of sentiments, from trust in Putin’s leadership to the anticipation of further bilateral relations development.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky spurned the legitimacy of the election, characterizing Putin as someone who is power-driven to the extent of sidestepping any bound to cling to power indefinitely.
