President Cyri Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his warm congratulations to Professor Dire Tladi of the University of Pretoria on his recent election as a judge of the International Court of Justice by the United Nations.
This esteemed appointment is a testament to Prof Tladi’s exceptional capabilities and a source of great pride for the nation.
In May 2023, Prof Tladi’s nomination by the South African government, along with South Africa’s membership on the Permanent Court of Arbitration, was endorsed by the Cabinet. President Ramaphosa expressed his appreciation for the United Nations’ confidence in Prof Tladi and highlighted that this achievement places him among the distinguished South Africans who contribute to the international community.
The International Court of Justice is the primary judicial body of the United Nations and one of its six principal entities. It is responsible for the settlement of legal disputes between states in accordance with international law. Additionally, it provides advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized UN organs and specialized agencies. The Court consists of 15 judges who are elected by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council for nine-year terms.
Prof Tladi is widely recognized as a leading international law scholar. His expertise spans various aspects of the field, including academia, government service, diplomacy, and practice. As a Professor of International Law at the University of Pretoria and President of the South African Branch of the International Law Association, Prof Tladi has been instrumental in advancing the study and understanding of international law.
Notably, he has served as Chair of the International Law Commission, an influential UN body that serves as a precursor to the International Court of Justice. Prior to this, Prof Tladi worked as a legal adviser to the South African Mission in New York and as a special adviser to South African Ministers of International Relations.
