President Cyril Ramaphosa
President Cyril Ramaphosa used the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai, known as COP28, as an opportunity to advocate for South Africa’s just energy transition and tie it to the nation’s developmental objectives. As South Africa faces an ongoing energy crisis, the President reiterated the importance of transitioning to equitable energy while ensuring the future of all citizens.
During the conference, President Ramaphosa addressed the nation’s energy crisis and emphasized that South Africa’s just transition to low-carbon economies aligns with its developmental priorities. The President also highlighted the impact of climate change on South Africa, particularly on rural communities that are disproportionately affected.
The President shared that South Africa’s Just Energy Transition (JET) Implementation Plan focuses on expanding investment in transmission networks, new energy vehicles, and the green hydrogen economy. He noted that this transition is supported by sustainable, measurable, and science-driven programs, including renewable energy procurement, biodiversity and conservation management, and successful natural resource management programs.
President Ramaphosa expressed concern over the lack of support from developed economies for developing countries’ efforts to combat climate change. He called for substantial financial support for countries affected by climate change, especially those relying heavily on coal and fossil fuel industries.
The President further outlined the JET Implementation Plan’s focus on reducing carbon emissions in the energy sector and emphasized the importance of engaging with workers, communities, businesses, and civil society to ensure a just transition.
During his visit to the South Africa pavilion, President Ramaphosa appreciated a striking artwork called the Umlibo tapestry, created by a group of rural women from Hamburg in the Eastern Cape. This artwork serves as a visual representation of South Africa’s commitment to climate change and a just energy transition.
