The Presidency has announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa will not be attending the farewell dinner for outgoing Chief Justice Raymond Zondo due to an eye infection that has impacted his scheduled engagements earlier in the day. In his stead, the President has delegated the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Ms. Thembi Simelane, to deliver a tribute on his behalf at the event.

The farewell dinner, scheduled for this evening at the Marriott Hotel in Johannesburg, marks the conclusion of Chief Justice Zondo’s distinguished 27-year judicial career, including his pivotal role as the head of the Zondo Commission investigating state capture in South Africa. The dinner is part of a broader series of events honouring Chief Justice Zondo, which includes a Special Ceremonial Sitting of the Constitutional Court set for the following day, where the Judiciary, the Executive, Parliament, and the legal profession will pay tribute to his contributions to the justice system.

The President’s decision to delegate the responsibility to Minister Simelane underscores the significance of the event, even in his absence. The Presidency noted that the President’s eye infection made it difficult for him to appear on television, leading to the cancellation of his attendance at the dinner. Despite this, the tribute will proceed, reflecting the high esteem in which Chief Justice Zondo is held for his leadership and unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law in South Africa.

The Special Ceremonial Sitting on the following day is expected to further celebrate Chief Justice Zondo’s legacy, particularly his leadership during the State Capture Commission, which has had a lasting impact on the country’s fight against corruption.
