South African President Cyril Ramaphosa officially extended his congratulations to U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump following his recent election win, solidifying South Africa’s commitment to a “close and mutually beneficial partnership” with the United States. Speaking on Friday, Ramaphosa remarked on his hopes for deepened cooperation in areas such as trade and security, especially as both nations prepare to lead the G20 consecutively.
“I had an opportunity this afternoon to personally extend South Africa’s well wishes and congratulations to President-Elect @realDonaldTrump on his election as the 47th President of the United States of America,” Ramaphosa announced. “During our telephone call, we both agreed on the need to strengthen our trade and political ties. We also look forward to hosting President-Elect Trump during the #G20 Heads of State Summit next year.”
Trump’s Return Sparks Global Reactions
Donald Trump’s return to the White House has been met with a wave of responses from global leaders. As a major figure on the world stage, Trump’s victory has prompted leaders from across the globe to express their optimism for strengthened bilateral and multilateral relations. African leaders, such as Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, shared their support, while leaders from other continents, including Emmanuel Macron of France, Narendra Modi of India, and Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, conveyed similar sentiments.
Ramaphosa’s Vision for U.S.-South Africa Relations
Ramaphosa highlighted South Africa’s priority of strengthening the relationship between the two nations, citing their history of collaboration in trade, health, and security. The United States is South Africa’s largest trading partner within Africa, and both countries benefit from agreements under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
“South Africa is committed to maintaining a close and mutually beneficial partnership with the United States,” Ramaphosa stated, emphasising the opportunities that both countries have to foster growth and stability.
As South Africa prepares for its G20 presidency in 2025, Ramaphosa noted the significance of working with Trump to tackle global challenges, ranging from climate change and economic stability to health and security.
A Shared Vision for G20 Leadership
The consecutive G20 presidencies of South Africa and the U.S. present an opportunity for a united front on key global issues. Ramaphosa expressed optimism about aligning with Trump on financial stability, sustainable development, and other shared concerns within the G20 framework. Both nations aim to leverage their influence to address international crises, including Africa’s economic growth and global inequality, reflecting their roles in global governance.
South Africa’s Diplomatic Approach in Strengthening Ties with the U.S.
Ramaphosa’s congratulatory message reflects South Africa’s pragmatic approach to diplomacy. The South African government’s openness to deeper engagement with Trump’s administration signals its focus on areas of mutual benefit, especially in trade and economic growth, which have the potential to create jobs and stimulate economies in both countries.
Key Areas of Cooperation Expected Under Trump’s Leadership
With Trump’s return to the presidency, South Africa looks forward to collaborative efforts in several priority areas:
1. Trade and Economic Growth
Trade relations remain central to U.S.-South Africa interactions. South Africa has been a key beneficiary of AGOA, enabling African exports to reach U.S. markets. With renewed dialogue, both nations hope to expand agreements, strengthening their respective sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and technology.
2. Health Initiatives
The U.S. has long supported health programs in South Africa, notably through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Trump’s administration is expected to continue backing health initiatives, particularly as South Africa seeks to address public health challenges.
3. Security Cooperation
Security and anti-terrorism initiatives are vital elements of U.S.-Africa relations. Ramaphosa looks forward to continuing security collaboration, which Trump previously emphasised in his first term. The focus is expected to include counter-terrorism and anti-organised crime initiatives.
4. Climate and Energy Policy
Although Trump’s previous climate policy stances were controversial, South Africa is keen on finding areas of alignment on energy and environmental issues. Ramaphosa’s administration remains committed to reducing carbon emissions, and discussions with the U.S. are anticipated to include sustainable development strategies.
5. Multilateral Cooperation through G20 and Beyond
Both nations aim to use their consecutive G20 leadership roles to drive significant progress in global economic policies. Issues such as financial stability, climate action, and sustainable development are expected to be central to their G20 agendas.
Global Responses to Trump’s Victory
As news of Trump’s victory spread, leaders from multiple countries offered their congratulations, underscoring the importance of collaboration on shared values. France’s Emmanuel Macron shared his eagerness to work with Trump again, noting their previous cooperation during Trump’s first term. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence in Trump’s leadership, describing him as a “friend,” while Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Trump’s commitment to “peace through strength.”
Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu described Trump’s victory as “history’s greatest comeback,” emphasising a robust alliance between the U.S. and Israel.
