President Cyril Ramaphosa to Attend 30th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda
President Cyril Ramaphosa, alongside Dr Naledi Pandor, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, will today embark on a visit to Rwanda. This visit is to partake in the 30th commemoration of the harrowing 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, an event that remains a somber landmark in the country’s history.
The commemoration, marking three decades since the genocide that commenced on April 7, 1994, and continued for 100 days, will witness Rwanda remembering the loss of over a million lives, predominantly of Tutsi ethnicity. The Presidency spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, shed light on the importance of this visit in an official statement.
“This year, Rwanda marks 30 years since the Genocide against the Tutsi which began on 7 April 1994 and lasted for 100 days, leading to more than a million deaths of mainly ethnic Tutsis. Every year, on this date, the government of Rwanda hosts an official ceremony to mark the beginning of the 100 days of commemoration. The ceremony of remembrance will take place in Kigali on Sunday, 7 April 2024,” Magwenya elucidated.
Magwenya further detailed the itinerary for the commemorative events which President Ramaphosa will be attending. “President Ramaphosa will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, followed by the National Commemoration ceremony, which will conclude with a Night Vigil at BK Arena in Kigali.”
The visit also highlights the strong bilateral relations that have been fostered between South Africa and Rwanda since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1995. These relations were further bolstered by a General Cooperation Agreement signed in 1999. The inauguration of the Joint Cooperation Commission in Pretoria on 22 June 2001 saw significant advancements in various areas including institution and capacity building, health, and education.
According to Magwenya, the relations between the two African nations have been fruitful. “Since the inauguration of the Joint Cooperation Commission in Pretoria on 22 June 2001, significant progress was recorded in areas such as institution and capacity building, health, and education. South African companies have also invested in Rwanda,” he highlighted.
