The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Free State has filed a motion of no confidence against Premier Mxolisi Dukwana. This motion was prompted by the Premier’s shocking decision to spend a staggering R3.5 million on the funeral of former Education MEC Tate Makgoe.
Makgoe passed away in a car accident on the N1 highway, near the agricultural municipality of Winburg in the Free State, in the month of March.
The EFF argues that such extravagant spending is unjustifiable, especially during a time when many residents are facing financial difficulties.
Unveiling the Scandalous Costs:
The Democratic Alliance’s inquiry into Premier Dukwana’s spending revealed the exorbitant costs associated with the funeral. These included a jaw-dropping R1,288,500 for food and beverages, R355,000 for various performing artists, R59,000 for flowers, and R28,380 for 20 couches for the family and dignitaries. Additionally, R130,900 was spent on a casket and burial plot, not to mention various other expenses such as lighting, stages, red carpets, projectors, and toilets.
The Controversial Service Provider:
Adding fuel to the fire, it was discovered that the Premier’s office engaged the services of C-Squared Consumer Connectedness (Pty) Ltd., a company that has faced court challenges and a HAWKS investigation due to alleged irregularities with the 2022 Macufe festival tender. This association raises serious concerns about the government’s role in perpetuating corruption and wasting taxpayers’ money.
The EFF’s Outrage and Accusations:
The EFF Free State vehemently criticized the ANC led provincial government for choosing to exploit the funeral of MEC Tate Makgoe rather than mourning his loss.
They accuse the government of using every opportunity to plunder state resources unchecked. This misuse of public funds not only reflects a lack of ethical and moral values but also tarnishes the legacy of an individual who dedicated his life to serving the education sector diligently.
The Damaged Legacy:
The EFF argues that the excessive spending on the funeral of MEC Tate Makgoe will now be forever associated with the looting of state funds, overshadowing the good he accomplished throughout his career. The ANC’s disrespect for the deceased and their disregard for ethical conduct has transformed a once-revered liberation movement into a group of opportunistic individuals driven solely by self-interest.
