R341,700 in Damages: Limpopo Schools Suffer Major Theft and Vandalism

Limpopo Schools

Polokwane – Limpopo schools have recently been plagued by a series of thefts and vandalism, resulting in extensive damages estimated at R341,700. The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has condemned these incidents, which have deeply affected educational institutions in Blinkwater Gidela Secondary School and neighbouring communities.

Detailed Incidents and Timeline

Break-Ins at Gidela Secondary School

The onslaught began in the early hours at approximately 04:30 at Ximausa village’s Gidela Secondary School. Police Spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, confirmed that law enforcement received multiple distress calls reporting break-ins at four different school locations.

According to initial reports, vigilant community members noticed flames emanating from the school premises and immediately alerted the complainant. Upon rushing to the scene, it was discovered that the administration block had been set ablaze. The ensuing investigation revealed forced entry, with an undisclosed amount of cash stolen.

Colonel Ledwaba detailed the extent of the destruction: “The items such as stationery, a photocopy machine, printer, furniture, soccer kits, and school trophies, among others, were damaged during the fire. The total value of damage and stolen items is estimated at R341,700.”

Further Incidents Across Various Schools

In another wave of criminal activity, Ximausa Mpembelani School, Ha-Aka Primary School, and Nobelhoek Primary School also suffered significant losses. The culprits made away with laptops and tables, further debilitating the functioning of these educational institutions.

Community and Police Response

The Limpopo community is on high alert and deeply disturbed by these brazen attacks on local schools. Colonel Ledwaba stated, “The community must come together to support our efforts in bringing the perpetrators to justice.”

Call for Community Assistance

Authorities have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the arrest of the suspects. Members of the community who might have witnessed suspicious activities or have relevant information are urged to step forward. They can contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Ramathlodi Satekge, at 082 319 9686 or reach out to the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111. Alternatively, individuals can visit their nearest police station or use the MySAPS app to report information anonymously.

Ongoing Police Investigations

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe assured the public that the police are diligently pursuing every lead. “Our investigation teams are working tirelessly to uncover the identities of those behind these reprehensible acts,” she declared. Police forensic teams have been dispatched to gather evidence from the affected sites, and local authorities have increased patrols in and around these schools to prevent further incidents.

Impact on Schools and Learners

The attack on these schools not only leads to financial strain but also disrupts the educational environment. The loss of essential items like stationery, computers, and even school trophies can have a demoralising effect on both students and teachers. “Our learners’ education cannot be compromised. We must find a way to rebuild and restore normalcy as soon as possible,” added General Hadebe.

Community Outpouring of Support

In response to these incidents, many community members have expressed solidarity, pledging to assist in any rebuilding efforts. Fundraising initiatives and donations are already in motion to replace stolen items and repair damages.

Preventative Measures for Future Safety

Addressing future security, Colonel Ledwaba suggested that schools should consider upgrading their security systems. “Installing alarm systems, CCTV cameras, and having regular security patrols can serve as a deterrent against such criminal activities,” he advised.
